7600GS AGP suggestions

I'm retiring my 9700pro to build a server pc, and am deciding what to replace it with. My gaming rig is a MSI Neo2 Platinum, S939 A3000+ and an AGP slot. As AGP is an older platform, I do not wish to spend a lot of money on a new video card, thus the 7600GS seems like like a good fit.

Are all 7600GS cards (like Newegg's AGP 7600GS selection) the same? I presume they are mostly Nvidia's reference designs. Are some clocked faster? Does anyone have faster memory or a better heatsink, etc etc?

Appreciate any info I can get.

my budget is about $140max. i really dont want to break $150 with shipping included. it is agp afterall, so i dont want to spend that much money.

Then I would recommend the X850pro over the 7600GS. The 7600GS is around the power of a vanilla 6800 IIRC while a X850pro is around the performance of a 6800GT.

interesting, i remember looking at The Best Gaming Video Cards for the Money: October 2006 over at tomshardware and not finding the 850pro so it never made it into my list. the 7600gs was and its selling point was newer gpu, low power requirements and silent cooling. your new info certainly puts things in a new perspective.

could you show me the x850pro on the interactive VGA charts over at tomshardware? the x850pro i found there were blowing away the 7600gs by a factor of 2! surely, the x850pro you linked to above ain't doing that for $135!

The X850 Pro is essentially a slightly higher clocked version of the X800 Pro which was a 12 pipe version of the X800/850XT and its slower then a 6800GT at default clockspeeds, however most of them are very good overclockers & some can work with an X850XT BIOS which will unlock all 16 pipes as well as up the default clocks which makes it into a great performer for the money.

The only current AGP card thats faster then the X850XT/XTPE is the 7800GS, and the AGP 7600GT (if you can find one) will pretty much match it in most benchmarks ... when the X1950 Pro AGP hits the shelves it will likely take the crown but since AFAIK its not available yet its a non factor in the decision... for the money the X850 Pro is the best value, UNLESS you get lucky & find either a real X850XT or slightly better AGP 7600GT.

I don't know about being 2x as fast as a 7600GS, but I do believe that an X850pro would definitley be faster.

thanks for the explanation. so if i wanted to get an understanding of the x850pro's performance on tomshardware vid charts, i should look at the x800?

i think the 7800gs or 7600gt is outta my budget. i really dont see the point in spending that much on an agp card these days.
