I have a 7600gt evga card that works well for must games, but chugs with many newer ones. I'm debating either purchasing an 8800gt or getting an E8400 c2d chip.

I currently have an e4300@ 3.2 ghz.

At what point is my cpu the limiting factor in how well my 7600 renders frames? Will I see a good framerate increase changing cpus, or will i get more bang for the buck by going to a new video card?

Definitely get a new video card. By today's standards the 7600gt is not even a midrange card, so if you want to run the latest games smoothly get a faster card. Your cpu is more than good enough for the latest games.

an 8800gt will more than double your performance. the 7600gt is a very slow card nowadays. your cpu is one of the fastest avail at 3.2 regardless of cache.

An 8800 GT will not double your performance, it will be like 4-5 times faster then that 7600 gt. If you buy the 8400 cpu you won't see any difference in games. So, like they've said, buy the card.

after reading the other threads about midrange cards, looks like a n ATI 512 mb card might be best bang for the buck right now.
