A few months ago my 45GB 75GXP drive made the noises of death and wouldn't boot. I managed to get it to work again by doing a format. However, it has returned. I am deciding to RMA now. I'm wondering what to expect in return.

You'll get the exakt same drive back... no?

Why would you get a worse drive back.. they could never do that without getting seriously fuxxored by the public.

Obviously not the *Exact* same drive, but most of the thyme they send 75GXPs that they have gotten and they have "fixed."

I Included that option because of This thread.

Hehe well lets hope you get that 60Gb deal :D

I have a 40GB 60GXP it's good in everyway except its noisy... think that they should start to learn from Seagate how to make silent drives.

Uh, the 60gxps are as quiet if not more so than most segate driives (not sure of newest gen). Yours is defective if its unecessarily loud.

TunaBoo,

Yes maybe most... but the 60GXP is their newest and compared to Seagates newest it seems to be stoneage technology.. the Baracudas are almost totaly quiet but the 60GXP are noisy ass hell... I have water cooling so my prespective on noise is alot better than yours. And no my drive is not broken in any way.

Traded my bad 45gig for a seagate barracuda3 40gig at the store i bought it, one of the reasons i prefer buying at small offline shops is because of flexibility.

Haribo, I have 2 60 GXP's in a raid 0 array and they don't make a peep. Both of them are completely silent during reads, seeks or whatever. Now maybe its my case or your particular drive is just really noisy that I don't know. The only thing I do know is that I own 2 60 GXP's and have installed dozens and I have never heard a loud one, hell i have never even heard one. So i am with Tunaboo on this one, you got a bum drive.

Ey WHipLAsh13 take off your blindfold plz!

Do you have a watercooled system with no fans in it exept the PSU which is a silent one?
NO I DO NOT THINK SO!

and don't lie now just to back upp your false point.

They don't sound much compared the most drives but in a silent enviroment NIGHTIME for ex they do sound ALOT.
Everyone I know says the same about their 60GXPs and 75GXPs, and all of my friends sleep with their comps, and
theyr on 24/7.

Why MOST people think they're silent is because they have a good performing CPU fan which will easily be much
louader than the HDD and you wont notice it.

But trust me it do make a horrible whining sound. And I even have my in quite seek mode, do you know what that is ;)

Even the Barracuda's makes alot of noise in a quite room nighttime but they're much more quite than the IBMs.
They'r also slower.

That unfortunetly shows that you're cluless, anyone saying that two 60GXP doesn't make a peep is pretty s¤%%d or
has a Tt Dragon Orb 3 installed ;)

well I have a 75GXP and it annoys me as hell especially at night when I hear my harddrive ALOT. I have no noisy fans anywhere so the only thing I hear is my HDD. Also, to dampen the noise a little I have a sleeping bag over my comp to make it shut up.

I'm going for a 'cuda IV as soon as I get the money for it

I sent back a 45 Gig 75GXP and got a shiny new 60 Gig 60GXP back. The 60GXP is very quiet. My system is not at all noisy either. Check my rigs for details. I sent the IBM drive back in a MAXTOR box. Dont know if that had anything to do with getting a new 60GXP :p

I just got a 45gb 75GXP back for my RMA :( How do you know if it's a refurb? Guess it doesn't really matter, as I'm going to ebay the stinky thing as fast as I can! ;)

Don't worry about that, you'll know when it's failing, trust me on that. If it fails you will definitely know. Usually not being able to access my files is a dead giveaway.;)

Most of the IBM drives can be set to either "Quiet" or "Normal" with the Hard Drive Utility software from IBM. If you think your IBM drive is too loud, and you bought it in the last couple of years, download the software and change the drive into "Quiet" mode. Be aware that there may be a small performance penalty for running the drive in "Quiet" mode.

I ordered the new western digital 100 gig with 8 megs of cache to replace my 30 gig 75gxp as my main drive.

My 75GXP has failed to spin up a few times, I don't trust the drive anymore.

That is classic.

I sent a 75GXP back in and they wanted to send me a refurbished 75GXP back. I said, "No, you have two choices - send me out a brand new drive, or send me out a full refund." They sent me out a new 75GXP that is 6mo old or so and not a problem since.

I had a Maxtor 15Gig ata100 7200rpm drive.. That thing was quiet as hell... I upgraded to a 40 Gig 60GXP... This hard drive does make a little noise but it is still fairly quiet... Remember the Quantum Bigfoots... That was loud. Some of the earlier WD's were loud as hell too... Personally i like to hear the hard drive a little thay way i cna tell if its doing something that it shouldn't.
