i dont plan on ocing
should i buy 754 3700+ or 939 3700+
i know that all X2 are 939...

i was wondering is it a wise choice to chooose 939 so that when X2 gets cheaper, i can just upgrade to X2 or i should just buy 754 and when upgrade time comes, i buy X2 and compatible mobo.

does 754 support dual channel? cuz im currently using kingston value ram 2x512

No s754 doesn't have dual channel.

A64s don't really need dual channel though.

I don't feel like covering the benefits of both again.

Do a search; this has been asked too many times.

If you're not overclocking, then obviously the s754 3700+ is a better deal, because it offers nearly identical performance at a much lower price.

You should probably try doing a search. This has been covered time and time again. If you don't upgrade all that often (once every few years) I would say go 754 then just plan on building a whole new machine for your next one. Are you still AGP with no real plans of upgrading your video immediately? Another option might be 939 + ASRock dual MB. It would be a little more future proof than a 754 setup if you plan on maybe going pci-e with a new cpu in a year or so.

By the time you're ready to upgrade, just get a newer CPU using the M2 socket, and a matching motherboard.

This is a very good point. If you are keeping your AGP video card but think you may upgrade video before you upgrade CPU, then the socket 939 ASRock motherboard should be on your short list.

BTW, what budget do you have?

Ignoring the 100% pure PR and marketing balogna of dual channel, SSE3, better memory controllers ect.. Socket 754 and 939 perform the same.

That said, they are now very close in price, so you should just go ahead and get 939 if you can. Although both sockets are a dead end with M2 around the corner, Socket 939 does have 754 beat in one area, and that is support for dual core processors. This support can be a difference of usefulness in a PC by maybe two years or more.

Well, considering current roadmaps from AMD is claiming S939 will not be "dead" till 2007, I'd say it's a fairly safe purchase. Even then, dead is not dead since your system is still a perfectly capable system and there is nothing to say you can't run games just fine on it. Nothing in AMD or Intel's roadmap leads me to believe that we will be seeing a significant boost in computing power for the next two to three years so an X2 S939 system should last you till at least the end of 2007 and if you're not a compulsive upgrader, likely well into 2008 as well.

As for S754, performance between it and S939 is very similar at this point. The systems are also quite similar in performance with a small edge going for S939. Where S939 wins out is the fact that there are X2 processors for it. Considering there is almost no price differential between the two, I'd have to say go with S939.

Unless you need CPUs under $130... can get Semprons for socket 754 for under $60, and Fry's Electronics CPU/mobo combos for $80 (2800+). Or, that 10 hour Newegg sale for an A64 2800+ with nice Epox NF3 board for $126. Not everybody can afford or need a $200-minimum setup. If the plan is to upgrade CPU within 1-2 years, socket 939 is a good choice. If plan is to use it until there's a compelling reason to upgrade (meaning years down the line) then socket 754 is fine. If plan is to upgrade to newest in a year or two (ie, socket M2) then socket 754 is fine.
