754---AM2?

Hi there,
I have a question about my motherboard concerning a CPU I want to purchase.

I couldn't tell you what I have, but it supports a 754 socket Sempron processor.

I was looking into the AMD Dual-core Athlon 64.
It's the perfect chip for me and my budget, though I wish I could save a little more and get the Intel.

Dual-core runs on a AM2 socket.
I've read a little bit and it appears that the CPU isn't compatible with 939 which Sempron comes in, but it didn't specify about the Athlon 64 Dual-core series.

It comes down to.....Will the Dual-core Athlon 64 Processor work for me, or will I need to upgrade me motherboard?

I don't know of any s754 that supports the x2's. I believe you would need to upgrade your mobo to an AM2 and then you'd be set for the x2's. There are s939 x2's, but since that socket is pretty much dead (not making anymore) you'd be better off with the AM2 mobo's. You can generally get one for about $50-$70 for decent ones. Add your low end x2 for another $60. Only thing is your DDR wouldn't work with an AM2 mobo, so you'd need to buy DDR2 ram. So I'm not sure what your budget is, but you'd be looking at a partial upgrade (CPU/mobo/DDR2) at the least. Now you could go the s939 route, but that would be putting $ down the toilet, as far as I'm concerned. So the basic upgrade route would be about $50 mobo/$60 CPU/$60 2gig's of DDR2. With that in mind you mentioned going with a Intel build. That would be about $40-60 more than the AMD build initially, so you can decide which route to go.

Your S754 mobo isn't worth upgrading, since NO dual-cores fit it.

I agree S939 would be a waste, but you could use your old DDR then.

Get an AM2 or S775 system, and do the mobo/cpu/DDR2 upgrade suggested above.

Thank you jjmIII, I try to help when I can. I've been over at Tom's hardware for a while and just recently started using this forum So hopefully my advice is sound enough to make sense to other people. I'm not an expert by any means, but I do ALOT of research on computer parts, so I hopefully learned a few things that I can pass onto others.

Some websites that sell hp memory were offering a $40 rebate recently with each 1 gig 667 stick, up to 4 or 5 sticks. One site was selling them for $12 after rebate with free shipping. Check slickdeals. But you may be a little dissapointed going from 754 to am2, performance wise. Sometimes a video card upgrade will do more for gaming. But if you want dual core, newegg is selling the 4200 939 manchester for $63 shipped, and some open box 939 boards for as little as $35 shipped with no accessories. Add a backplate and heatsink, and you'll have a decent upgrade for about $115 or so. Or you can sell your ddr, which is selling for more than some ddr2.

They never made any dual core Skt 754 chips, and those Skt 939 chips won't fit in his Skt 754 motherboard. Good points, though, for anyone with a single-core, on a Skt 939 board.

I have a socket 939 and as much as I like it I have to suggest you dont get one. GO straight for the AM2, it will let you last longer in the future. If you wanna save money get a cheap CPU now and upgrade later.

When I finally upgrade it will be to the newest chipset, socket type, and RAM I can possibly get ahold of.
