$750 - What Laptop?

I have $750... what's the best laptop that I can get for the money? Preferably ordering off of newegg.com

With all due respect...

Another one of those "order today - complain a month later" why it hasn't been delivered yet.

Just go to the store and play with one before you buy...

UPDATE: I just saw it has only 1GB of RAM. Are you kidding, or did I click on the wrong link?

I don't really understand your post, but I'll assume that this is a response to the previous post and it is defending your laptop choice..

The Dell looks like a better choice, although it might have less RAM, it has a real video card and a superior processor. While RAM can be upgraded, the video card and processor can't.

Yes, I was responding to the previous post.

The link sent me to the >$1400 laptop, but I understand that it will be reduced to $750 with the coupon.

I would not call the T5300 a "superior" CPU - it might be a little faster, but without the 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium will run slower that the HP with the Turion. And I believe that the Turion is superior in terms of power consumption.

Yes, it does have a better VC. But we don't know what the OP will be using his laptop for.

I am using my Compaq with 2GB RAM, 2.0GHz Sempron and 128MB shared x200 for Internet browsing and some applications, and am perfectly happy with it. And it is so easy just to go to the store and check it out, and return it if necessary.

The other thing - this forum is full of people complaining about the Dell's postponed delivery dates. Why wait, if you can just go and get it...?

Well, maybe it's just me, but I would never buy anything without being able to examine it first...

IIRC, the 1705 only had availability problems with the GeForce 7800 model, and that was about a year ago.

Yeah, the tonight deadline is a bit unreasonable for such a large purchase, and no much information on the intended use was given 🙂.

Just poking my head in for minute to tell you that actually the Core Duos and Core 2 Duos almost as a rule, have better power management and consumption than the Turions and Turions X2s. And with the new Santa Rosa chipset, and the upcoming Penryn series of chips, the gap will only get wider. I used to use AMD exclusively, but that was because they were better for what I needed. Then I got a laptop, and Intel basically owns the laptop world right now, and for good reason.

Blah, blah, blah...
Back on you! 🙂

Talking about retailers, I wouldn't buy toenail clippers from Circuit Sh!tty!

Those guys cheated me out of two rebates, a while back, e.g. a video card that supposedly had two rebates - one from them, and one from the vendor. This went on for almost a year...

The vendor told me C.C. had the wrong dates on the rebate (they printed it out on a cash register receipt), and C.C. told me they had sent me their rebate, which they never did...

Now, all I use Circuit Sh!tty for is 'rentals'. I 'buy' stuff there, play with it until I'm bored, then return it for a refund - been doing it for 4 years now! LoL!

Because of their crappy rebates, crappy customer service, crappy treatment of their employees, they're dieing a slow death. Actually, I'm surprised they're still in business!

So, if you buy anything from these jerks! - caveat emptor, baby!

I'll take a chance on Dell any day, compared to these idiots!

I fully understand that you have an issue with CC.

What does that have to do with an HP laptop...? There are other stores that would happily match or beat the CC price...

BTW... have you read other recent posts/complaints/articles about DELL, their 0% financing scams and class action lawsuits in NY and TX, delivery delays etc...?

But again... we all have our preferences, and we all have some grievances...

I dunno! What does CC have to do with Dell...?

With all due respect...

I work for a major corporation and they have Dell computers/monitors sitting on ever desk in their 300+ buildings - plus Dell laptops for those that require them. Information Systems (IS/IT) doesn't have any problems getting them, nor do I hear any complaints about same from users. Dittos for our (ahem) HP laser printers!

Speaking of issues, and buying locally, I was talking to a 'tech' at PCClub less than a week ago. I was actually asking him about Acer laptops. He said, they were okay - nothing special . However, he added, "Speaking as a tech, we see more HP laptops in here than anything else!" soooo...

Once again, the 17" Dell laptop that I linked to (above) seems to be the best bang for the OP's 750 bucks! 😉

You know, the OP hasn't come back here since his original post on August 9th.

He is probably sitting somewhere, playing with his HP, ACER, Toshiba or Dell laptop and laughing at us bickering here...

Nope, I'm here more than a few days later and I'm going to be ordering tonight.. By the looks of it I'll end up going with the Dell and then upping ram later on if I feel it is necessary. Reason I'm buying a laptop is for college, I was going to order before the trip down but I didn't know shipping addy etc etc. So I'm grabbing that Dell tonight - reason the rush is on is because class is already in session.

edit: eeek - the coupon was previously used and will not allow me to use it.. Crapola.. What's the deal now?

- I suppose I have until Monday since they wouldn't ship the computer out on Sunday either way.

Sorry!

Evidently, after doing some checking, that coupon was only good for 1000 uses.

Ppl must have jumped on that deal, and used all 1000 coupons...

Man, does Dell deal in tonnage, or what!?!?!?! That coupon came out like 2-3 days ago... 🙂

A deal that is NOT AVAILABLE is not a deal...

Regardless of the numbers.

And quantity does not necessarily equal quality - just read the other recent threads.
