750 watt overkill (?)

Hi guys,

I bought a 750 watt corsair XL 8 years ago, however I think it is a overkill for my current system:

i5 2500k
MSI Twin Frozr 7850 2gb
8 gb ram
Samsung HD103SJ (5 watt)
Samsung EVO (3,5 watt)
Western Digital WD10EADS (5 watt)

I would like to upgrade to a GTX 1070 in the near future, and upgrade my CPU within a year (6600k or similar).

What would you guys recommend? Sell the 750 watt powerhouse, and go for 450 watt? If so, which one?

Thanks in advance!

You would be fine with a quality 550w gold or platinum unit. Since they are so efficient, and usually at or around the same price, you could get a 650w that should cover you for many years for future upgrades (some units out there have 10 year warranties).

Unless you are going to SLI, you don't need 750w. A 8 year old used power supply likely will not sell, and even if it does, you'll probably pay more in shipping then you will receive for it. I say keep it and use it as long as it still works. Just because the power supply is 750w, that doesn't mean that is how much power it is actually using all the time. It pulls what it needs, and loses a little bit from the wall due to its efficiency.

Edit:

Also, depending on the model number and specs of your current PSU, you might have to upgrade it when you upgrade to a z170/6600k system as it might not be compatible at all (some older PSUs won't work with Haswell CPUs and later due to some changes).

I echo what UsandThem says, an 8 year old PSU will be a hard sell. If you plan on getting a 1070/i5 combo you could easily power it with a 500+W quality PSU you can find great deals on gold certified units, and that's all you need in this new age of efficient hardware. I can recommend the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W Gold, it is a flawless unit and offers enough juice for almost everyone using a single graphics card config.

Thanks you for the replies!

So best thing to do is keeping the 750 watt untill it dies, since I won't notice it on my powerbill?

I will remember to buy a 550 watt , also when upgrading my CPU.

Yes. The power supply pulls the power needed by your components, and does not constantly pull 750w.

Keep it until you upgrade to the 6600k system you mentioned earlier, because it likely will not be compatible as old as it is.
