74gb Raptor vs 200gb seagate (7200rpm) in raid 0

We all know that the WD74 raptor 10k drive rocks. but i've seen some guys post and say that you can get the same perfomance from two 200gb seagate or maxtor 7200rpm drives in raid 0 at the same cost (with 4x the size) anyone has info on this??

thanks

The RAID 0 setup will give you higher STR (sustained transfer rate) in theory, while the single Raptor would give you lower access times...

uhh, sorry for sounding like a noob, but, so which will be faster in the real world?? and in case it depends on the task, what tasks are better for each?? thanks.

As you guessed, it does indeed vary by task...higher STR is useful for large sequential file transfers/reads, such as in video editing....lower access times will be more beneficial in cases when you're reading a lot of different smaller files - this type of usage pattern would show up in server-type apps, among others.

However, Anandtech did do an article a few months back when they compared the two, and found that RAID 0 usually does not provide much performance increase for desktop users. It all depends on what you're using the computer for, really.

i believe that for overall use a raptor is still faster...as with the artcile RAID only speeds up some things and usually it will not help in the desk top area...

from what i do gather though its mostly the jeleous ppl who cannot afford the raptor that say the seagate is faster, these are also the peop,le that say it sounds like a jet engine...

if you have the money go with the raptor...

thanks for the input guys.

i do want to clarify my question though: is a SINGLE 74gb raptor better than 2 seagate/maxtor drives 200gb in RAID 0?

anyway, i think that since i am just using it as a desktop, maybe the raptor would be better?? also is it really noisy?? i don't want to add a noisy component to my system. system in sig below. my system can run with the CPU fan disabled. ony the PSU and case fans are on which hardly make a sound.

thanks again. am really new to the hard drive stuff.

Yes.

Performance wise....ABSOLUTELY NOT! gb/$ wise yes....but then why would you RAID it in the first place if your looking for cheapness...

no its not the quietest HD but it is not loud by any means...it has a distinctive sound...i can not even hear mine right now over my radiator fans.....if you are really worried about noise and want a quiet PC, with any HD you should put some rubber sound proofing around it...

I think you have that twisted around. I think you meant "Performance wise, YES! Gb/$ wise, no."

son of noob...please clarify your statement:

"Performance wise....ABSOLUTELY NOT! gb/$ wise yes....but then why would you RAID it in the first place if your looking for cheapness... "

note that 2xseagate 200gb 7.2k 8mb HDDs are only slightly more expensive than 1 74gb raptor. that's why I am asking which is a better solution.

btw, my system already has rubber sound insulation.

Opps my bad...i twisted around the OP's queestion when i read it..i am agreeing with you

i thought it asked if two seagates were better than a single raptor...see post above the other one i am for the raptor...

Well, I have dual 74 GB Raptors and I couldn't be happier. The system runs smothly and I've never had any trouble whatsoever. Everything is lightening fast. That being said, it would probably be really fast with normal drives as well. 🙂
