I remember reading about this...in which there are several grades of automotive glass available for replacement. The best (with no optical defects) are sold at the dealerships at a premium costs. Others, with slight imperfections make it into the aftermarket. These imperfections are not likely to be noticible and may save you a bit of money. So long as the repair shop is reputable, I would worry more about the installation process than I would about the quality of the glass.

Speaking of the glass, windshield glass is a plastic sheet sandwhiched between two layers of glass. Its a little thicker than the glass on the side and may incorporate heating elements or reflective coatings.

get factory replacement parts. i think i saw on dateline that they actually add to the structural strength of your roof:p they showed lousy windshield repairmen that did it all wrong, touching the edges and oiling up the places where adhesive contacts, weakening the bond:p

Any windshield you buy, no matter where from is going to be of the same material, which is safety glass, ie. glass with a plastic material in it to prevent it from shattering. It's the law and there is not a company in the world who makes windshields any other way, unless of course they are illigal.

Make sure you get a good shop to replace your windshield... one that's not installed properly can cause u a lot of problems down the road (eg. leak around the edges, condensation, etc)...

There's also the points stated above... the windshield does contribute to the structural integrity of your vechicle, so it's very important it's done right...
