they're both worth the money, it just depends whether you're looking for a budget vid card or a middle of the road video card.

7900GS is much much faster, 7900GS is great er than 7600GT, it is close to a 7900GT and may roughly equal or even beat the 7800GT.

None of them can. Not even a 7950GX2.

However cards like 1900xt will hold you atleast for a yr, after a yr or yr and a half, either these cards will be too slow(depending upon your res and setting) or won't have Dx 10 capable gaming or both.

the 7300 really wont keep you going for 3 years id imagine, not with any great speed anyway

the 7900GS will last you a decent while longer, so long as you keep things to a medium, ie med-low res, med details, light use of AA and AF

yes a x1900 will last you even longer, it is a powerful card and it should get you through the next year with games playing at a reasonably high level. but at the end of the day no card you buy today is really gonna cut the mustard in 3 years time.

especially with vista and DX10 just around the corner.

my actual reccomendation is to grab the 7300GT (unless the 7900 isnt much more) and simply use it to tide you over until mid range DX10 parts (based of G80 no doubt) appear.
that way you will have a decent card now, then in a few months you can pick up a mid range DX10 part for the same money that will last you alot longer than either the 7300,7900 or x1900

The 9700 Pro, a 2002 card, can still play games (half decently mind you and quite good if you tweak and keep your computer in good shape) so I'm sure a 7950GX2 will last AT LEAST 3 years, considering its SLI and all...

I am not a huge gamer, but just recently got E6400 core 2 duo and 6600 256mb for $47.

I ran the following demos (in game settings, 0 AA/ 0 AF)

Doom 3 @ 1600x1200 high quality
Chronicles of Riddick @ 1280x1024 high quality
Far Cry @ 1280x1024 very high quality

I still can't believe that an 8 pipeline 128-bit card ran the 3 very intensive games of 2004/2005 without any trouble at all. I also found that there was no need to turn on AF or AA in the doom 3 engine games since they are so dark and looked good to begin with. Of course my tolerance for framesrates and quality might be much lower than a gamer who spends $300 on a graphics card. However, 7300GT is just poor value to begin with for the price.

OP, I'd get X1900xt 256mb for $220 over 7900gs, or 7600GT for $120 if you are on a budget.

The Leadtek 7300GT 128meg DDR3 is a decent card. Runs on a par with the 7600GS. available from Tiger for about $80 and Newegg for about $84. I get right at 12000 on 3DMark2003, 5,000 on 3DMark05, and 71,400 on Aquamark3. This is with the card clocked at 630core/1630memory on a A64-3500+@2.5GHz. Overall I'm very satisfied with the card although I know it will cause me trouble if I buy FSX. I don't expect frame rates over 20 with mid to low settings. I get 40 to 50 fps on FS9 with most settings maxxed. I'm seriously considering another one to run SLI.

i think a 7900gt or gto could probably make it to 3 years. obviously you'd be lowering the detail those 3 years. though i think the first midrange cards i'd be more sure about is whatever midrange dx10 cards nvidia comes out with next spring (i.e. the cut down g81s).

but if you think about it, 3 years ago a midrange card would be something like a 9800 non pro or a 5900 non ultra and cost something like $220-250. and that would still be able to play most games now, though it'd be just about time to upgrade.

Those of us using Nvidia will tell you to go that way. Those using ATI will tell you to go that way. Do some searching on the net for reviews and decide for your self because chances are you won't get an unbiased opinion on any forum.

Most boards with 24 pin connecters will function ok with power supplies that have 20 pin connectors so long as the 4 pin atx connector is plugged in.

The x800GTO occasionally outperforms the 7600GS and 7600GT...look at THG VGA charts, thats what i would have bought as a temp solution!

So you all made the poor guy get a 7300gt?!

The 7600GT was the best bet for performance/$. They are regularly 105.00 on newegg after rebates.

I hope he isn't too upset with the 7300gt performance. I can't believe that it will play many games well.
