7200 RPG 2TB drives.. why so expensive?

I find it highly outrageous that 2TB 7200 RPM drives are still going for $250+ since 5900 RPM 2TB drives have dropped like a stone to sub $90. Is there some technical barrier that justifies the price or is it just milking?

those sound like RE4 drives which are binned and have TLER for enterprise use.

but its like an intel cpu that is $300 and the unlocked model for $999 - they were cut from the same die but one performs better - so it goes to nearline (enterprise) storage use. the junk drives go to consumer, and the super-junk drives go to external enclosures (google it i jest not).

demand is high for 2TB SATA drives in nearline storage - so it eats up supply for the junk/super-junk consumer class.
