In my opinion, the 7200 rpm ata66. I have used both in my system and I found that the 7200 drive was faster. Of course I now have a 7200 rpm ata100 drive.

You have to list the actual drives before a valid comparison can be made. Odds are, the 7200RPM will be faster at most tasks though.

check the spec, compare the internal transfer rate, forget about the rpm and the interface.

5400 rpm hd's internal sustained transfer rate is just little bit more than ATA33 rate,
7200 rpm hd's internal sustained transfer rate is still not over ATA66 rate.

Depends of the drives. Newer 5400RPM drives might actually be faster than old 7200RPM. ATA-66 or ATA-100 doesn't make almost any difference, today's fastest IDE drives can barely sequencially read 50Mb/s max.

It depends on the drive. I have a 15 Gig WD 7200 RPM ATA66 drive that is only good for ~ 25 MB/sec. Not even the full ATA33 spec. Don't go by the ATA rating or the rotational speed. When you are talking about a new drive, the 7200 RPM will usually be faster. If its an older drive, you have to look a little deeper.
