So I plan to upgrade my system a little bit, i currently have 2 150 gig sata II in a striping raid. and a 320 gig for all my important files, data. i'm thinking of replacing my raid with a 10k hard drive or i heard the 7200.10 was pretty good, is raid even worth it? or should i just have one hard drive and keep most data on the 320 gig?

10k drive are definitely faster.. the 1tb hitachi comes pretty close to the raptor 10k.. assuming thats what you mean when you say 10k..

the 7200.10 750 isn't as fast as the hitachi.. but speed increase isn't like double.. you probably can't see the difference..

so for me, I rather have a 1tb drive @ 85-95% of a 10k raptor at 150gb..

850gb more for slight speed decrease.. :)

So having more space would make it run faster? I never knew that. 1 TB is a hell of a lot of space. Guess that would mean there would be no point in my 320 gig for my data?

I love my 7200.10. I guess if you NEED 1tb and can afford it, the Hitachi would be nice, but you can't go wrong with Seagate drives, especially the .10.

i don't need a TB, thats a ton of space. but would you recommend 7200.10 over a 10k rpm one?

I think th raptor will be faster. It all depends on how much of a premium you are willing to spend for that extra bit of performance. For me, it is a no brainer. All of my files are on a server down in the closet. I dont need a lot of space, just enough to install office and my games.

If space is a problem, you can always get the raptor and grab a 500GB drive for 120 bucks.

well i don't think space is a problem, i still have 183 gigs of space left on the 320 gig, so you think gettin 1 raptor is fine, no point in raiding it?

Yeah, don't RAID the raptor. Just pick one up and be happy knowing that it is very fast. If you want the capacity go for the big drive. I've got a raptor and a couple of 250s in my computer plus a couble TBs in a home server. I don't regret the raptor one bit.

there are sata drives around that are faster than the raptor, just not quicker. with the raptor the seek time is where you get a more responsive machine. comparing a 1TB 7200rpm hdd to a 150GB 10K rpm hdd is apples and oranges - one is for a quick, responsive system and the other is going to be used for massive storage, so they are meant to work together, not replace one or the other, imo
