This will mainly be used for storage on my work box. I do all kinda stuff that requires a lot of storage. If you had to buy a rather large drive, would you put all your eggs in one basket with a 750GB or would you go with 3x320GB?
 
I would go with the 3 drives so a drive fails you don't lose everything. The more important question is what is your backup plan? Either configuration is fine with a good system for backups.
 
Well you do realize, that if you're going to use the 2x 320's combined in raid 0, then if either drive dies, you lose EVERYTHING on both. And if you raid 1 them, copying everything onto both, then if one dies you have the other but you only get 320GB of space.

If I get 4x320, would I have 1280GB worth of storage or would it just be similar to RAID1 where you would just have 320GB of storage but with 1280GB worth of backup?
 
If you got 4x320 you'd have 960GB of storage (3x320GB, not taking into account the 1k != 1024 issue). 3 drives for storage and 1 for partiy with RAID 5.
 
4x320 would be sick. Too bad I don't feel like spending that much on HDs. Well, I could... but I don't need that much storage.

Zip tie a fan to the back of the HD cage.
 
Hmm... I'll have to check on the dimensions of the P180 HD cage. From what I've seen in pictures, it's exactly the same size as a 120mm fan. Let me go check. Be nice if somebody w/ a P180 can chip in on this.

Ok, from this Viperlair picture, it looks like the HD cage is the same height as a 120mm fan. Notice the front intake 120mm fan to the right side of the cage.
 
Put them in the lower cage and use the 120mm fan there to provide airflow. Or the top one and put the fan infront of the HD cage, i think it's designed to have an optional one there (i left one sitting there loose a while back, worked untill a wire found it's way in and started clicking :| )
 
2x250, RAID 0, with a 500GB eSATA-connected external backup. You'll reap the speed benefits of the raid0 array and get the backup safety of the 500GB external drive that you can take with you in case of an emergency.
 
The breakdown for harddrive failures are:

67% - PCB
25% - heads and/or platters
8% - spindle motor

If you have 2 identical drives and one fails you can retrieve the data from the bad drive by swapping the PCB in 67% of failures. This doesn't work with RAID-0 for obvious reasons.

The 320 barracudas have fewer platters and heads than an equivalent non-perpendicular drive. Fewer platters and heads means better reliability.

I just got 2 320GB 7200.10 Barracudas from Newegg today. I used a promo code "BUYBARRACUDA" to save $5 on an already good deal. Unbelievable value.

Yeah they are very good bang for buck + you get 5 years warranty. All of my drives are Seagates any I never experienced any problems with them :knock on wood: 🙂
