Zoom in an area to see the closeup of it. You can see people in the windows.

Hope you like the image.

For the record, it's a touch under 720 Megapixels (approx 40,000 x 18,000).

It is made up of about 170 images, taken with a Canon 10D and a Canon
100-400L lens.

Almost all of the photos were taken at 400mm, with a few of the "fill" shots
(eg, the sky in the top left corner) taken at around 200mm.
All photos are at ISO 200, 6 seconds, f/6.7 (Manual mode)

The large buildings (ie, all of the office buildings) are at least 1200
metres (1300 yards) away from the camera! The Harbour Bridge Pylon is
about half that distance away.

The Zoomify image is made up of 14,729 jpg files, each around 5-15kb,
which are demand-loaded. Good thing too, given that the original image is a
1.3Gb Photoshop file!

Thats astounding. How does it work? How can he get such detail from such a long range?

I used to work on a compression set for a camera with 5040 x 5040 resolution. Very similar. You could take pictures from 35,000 feet and see the logo on someones hat in a baseball stadium. Those camera's are out there, but not many are available to civilians.

Maybe with a really slow-speed 8x10 large format film, but just about anything else wouldn't have the resolution.

No. You'd need at least 8x10 format and a 2000dpi drum scan to come close, and it woulnd't be nearly as clean. That's basically what the gigapixel web-site is. Just some dude with an 8x10 format camera and lousy composition skills.

The incredible shot of the Sydney Harbor is a basic panorama stitch, and if you can closely you can see some seams.

This is cool because I've been doing night shots with my 10D and stictching them together, but the biggest file I have is 10,000 by 3,000. Makes a helluva print though.
