Awesome story, however some of the comments by readers were disheartening. A few believe the homeowner should be arrested and sued.

They're probably his whinny punk ass friends that are also in need of a good whooping.

"Gregory McCalium had become involved in a long-running dispute with Mr Corti about noise" ... sounds like some ATOT threads.

but who was making too much noise ?

He attacked a man with a knife. Ever hear of attempted murder? A little googleing shows that most people with that charge (in the US anyway) end up with 12-20+ years in the slammer.

thats the UK for you. the fact the old guy (by the sounds of it) was on trial also is wrong.

Never would have happened if they just banned fists already. Its an epidemic over there!

That was one of the best articles I've read in awhile. The 72 year old sat on him until police arrived? lol. Anything that was said by the old fellow is absolute gold, sounds like a cool guy. I'd love to know how intoxicated the young guy was, he had to be pretty hammered.

In my viewpoint the guy didn't have any intention of murdering the old man, but rather wounding him, and assumed it'd be easy since he was so old.

The old man would have to have at least been wounded, on the floor with the burglar taking a swipe at his chest or neck..rather he was simply caught by surprise and acted more scared than anything else.

Not defending the guy at all of course, but attempted murder would be an extreme charge here..

Good article. My only quip is that they didn't preface it with the location of the incident. Isn't that taught in school anymore? When you write a news story, the first words after the headline should be the location of the incident THEN the story.

from what i can tell from those comments, i'd say most of them criticizing the old guy and calling for his arrest were in jest.

however, the UK is indeed a fucked up country for their love of criminals.

I didn't know the guy was an expert in where to stab elderly people so they don't die.

Its like the retarded argument of "why didn't the cops just shoot the gun out of the guys hand!!!"

I don't understand the "attempted murder" charge. Either you murder someone or you don't. IF you don't, it's assault or aggrivated assault. If "attempted murder" is a charge of it's own that has it's own punishment, then why not just treat it as murder?

Are you saying that if someone shoots at someone but misses, they should be charged with reckless endangerment and not attempted murder?

most likely it would have been assault with a deadly weapon. ive been accused of that as well, they told me i was facing a minimum of 5 years. of course i was innocent, and never even saw a court room.
