Like the title states, when the router is factory state, the default gateway is 72..xxx.xxx.x and the internet works. but i can't access the wireless setup by putting 192.168.1.1 which is the default IP address listed in the manual. 72.xxx.xxx.x doesn't work either which is listed as the default gateway under "ipconfig". but as soon as i "ipconfig /release" and then "/renew", the default gateway changes to 192.xxx.x.x and then i'm able to access the wireless setup but the internet stops working. I'm stumped. This is for a zyxel p-870hw-51a v2. Same thing happens with the smc wbr14s-n4. Any help is appreciated.

You could write a book about this problem. In short:

What should be happening:
- 192.168.1.1 is the internal ip-adress of your router. It is a local ip-adress and it should be the internet gateway for all your computers.
- 72.x.x.x is a public ip-adress which is a router of your internet provider
- your router should distribute ip-adresses (using DHCP) in the 192.168.1.x-range to your computers.
- your router should obtain a 72.x.x.x public ip-adress to acces the internet. It does not communicate this address to your computers.

What may be going wrong:

1) You have connected the internet cable to one of the LAN-ports of the router. This is wrong.

2) Your computer may have accidentally gotten an ip-address from your provider instead of from the router (this can happen while a router is booting). ipconfig/renew will get you a correct internal ip-address, but your provider has linked the external ip-address to your computer and will not give to to the modem untill this link has expired (usually this takes no more than 10 minutes, max. 1 hour). The following may help:
- shut down router and disconnect/shutdown all computers
- wait 10 minutes
- boot router and wait untill the lights indicate it haz internets
- boot/connect computers

3) Your router is broken or misconfigured. Try restoring factory settings.

Keep in mind that any solution to your problem may take some time because you usually get only 1 ip-address from your provider. Your provider may link this ip-address to one of your devices for a certain period. The connection will not work until this link has expired.
