710n, 712n, or 710t?

I'm looking to spend $300 or less on a 17" LCD. I've heard great things about the 710n, but the main knocks are that it only does 16.2 million colors as opposed to 16.7, and that it lacks DVI. People have pointed me to the 712n, which supposedly is the same LCD but with 16.7, and the 710t, which does 16.2 but has DVI. Some have told me that DVI is a necessity, others that with 17" LCDs, especially this one, it's not needed. Right now, the 710n can be had for 295 shipped, the 712n is available for about 270 at Best Buy after rebates. The 710t is a lot more expensive, and I really don't want to spend that much. Any observations/suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks a lot.

With only 16.2 million colors, I don't think the DVI will make that big of a difference. I have the same problem as you and can't decide on whether to buy the 710N or not. It's a tough choice, especially for $265 after a $30 rebate on newegg.com.

Why not the 712n? Look at BestBuy.com, they've got it for around $280 after rebates.

I thought the 712n was just the 16.7 million color version of the 710n. If that was the case, I can't see any reason to get the 710 considering the 712 can be had for cheaper.

Read that. It's definately a great monitor. I don't think the 16.2 Million colors will make that big of a difference. And Newegg.com is the only site telling me 16.2. All others are telling me max 16.7. I'll definitely be getting this monitor.

Maybe the 710N-2, which is the 2nd gen of this monitor has 16.7 million colors, and newegg mixed the specs from the 1st gen.

Samsung's site lists the 710n-2 as 16.2, and the 712n as 16.7. The 712 has a slightly decreased viewing angle (160/140 as opposed to the 710's 160/160).

Check out Tom's hardware and Xbit Labs reviews on the 710N and 710T. Apparently the 710T (or at least, the samples they reviewed) have MUCH better response times than the 710N (they are both rated at 12ms, but in actuality, apparently, the 710T is much better).

Don't take my word for it though, browse Tom's Hardware Guide's displays review and the "Other" section of Xbit Labs for LCD reviews.

This is true... and is why the 710t is more expensive.

Bah,

Newegg is less and less becoming a deal for me from CA. I will be picking this up from BB since taxes will kill me. Gravy if BB is now charging the $8.00 recycling fee to boot. Sad thing was I didn't even know this was a ballot measure till retailers started slapping the fees on.

Still.....is there anything else better than this monitor in this price range ~(300 after rebates at most stores)? 12ms response time, 600:1 contrast ratio...I don't think there's another one out there, but if there are other opinions I would very much like to hear them.

Thanks.

It's really not noticeable gaming. Only if you start editing pictures would you see the circle-oval effect.
