Heard this story on the radio this morning, but I can't find a link!

A man heard some noise outside his home. It was 'thugs' vandalizing cars. He went out and told them to stop. They proceeded to beat him. His 71 year old friend came out brandishing a 22 caliber pistol, and told them to stop, or else... They didn't stop, so he shot at them, hitting one of the attackers in the arm.

The cops arrested him for the shooting. The wounded 'thug' was treated and arrested for an earlier altercation. The cops said the 71 year old should have called 911 instead of using the gun. Sounds reasonable.

SO the old man should have continued to let the thugs beat the crap out of the guy, walked back inside and called the cops. That assuming the thugs didn't beat the sh*t out of the old man as he walked back inside to call the cops. Not to mention his neighbor could have been killed by the time cops showed up.

This country is going to hell, you try and protect your friends and family but go to jail for it.

Arrested, yes, but I doubt he'll be convicted since that would just be silly.

It seems a use of force he was justified because his friend faced serious injury. I can't believe they arrested him and won't allow him bail. How asinine. This is one of those cases that calling the police would have been nice, but someone faced a serious injury AT that moment.

That's just plain ridiculous. He should have gone for the kill shot.

I'm sure he was, but it isn't that easy to hit someone with a .22 pistol when you are old and pumped up.

What if he was? I wouldn't put it past Florida's legal system. There's some pretty stupid people here.

Darn it, still no link. I'd like to see some quotes from the cops. I wonder if he'd be in less hot water if he'd used an axe or something?

Ornery, I am pretty disappointed that you don't know how to use google news. Here's a link.

Wonderful justice system in that county.

Damn, you would think he was in the UK to get treated like that for what he did.

At the very least California!

Yep... I can just picture the jury trying to "bubble-in" their votes for the verdict and hanging him by mistake...

A 63 year old and a 71 year old against three 18-20 year old thugs... And the cops didn't think it was a dangerous situation?! Un-fvcking-believable. They didn't even charge the thug that was shot for that assault, despite the fact that he was obviousily at the scene!

The cops are completely wrong in this case. The man being beaten was in IMMINENT danger. As such, simply calling 911 and waiting for police is NOT an option if you want to save the life of the guy getting beat up.

This really sucks.
