xyion - Thanks for the recipe, if GeekFitness/LowCarbsWeb has a recipe section you should post it there if you haven't already.

Sounds delicious, I may have to give that a try.

Coupla days.

Seriously, depends on your metabolic rate. If you're just now getting into an exercise program it would take longer than if you've been active for some time and have increased your metabolic rate. Also, the more carbs you intake the less your body burns fat as it's using up the carbs.

I'd rather go the cautious/conservative route and consume as few carb's per day as possible.

Can you do that without starving yourself or feeling hungry all the time?

I wish fish were easier to prepare.

I've been on Atkins for 4 weeks (today is start of 5th). It is easy to follow a low carb diet if you have any sense of willpower. I'm lucky if I get 10 carbs a day and I eat a lot. I'm currently stuck at a total loss of 20lbs, but my stomache, neck and legs are gradually getting thinner/smaller. I know I'm burning carbs cause I use ketosis sticks every other day.

The expensive way to get low carbs is to go and get lots of low carb foods. The cheap way is to get a bunch of tuna, hamburger, chicken, and pork rinds.

I've actually gotten to the point where I'm not hungry and I'd rather just eat a can of tuna w/ mayo instead of preparing a meal. I no longer have the urge to eat candy or even drink cokes (I was a cokeaholic: almost 5 cans a day). I drink about a gallon of water a day.

My carbs lately have been coming from asparagus, low carb bread, peanuts, almonds, atkins ice cream, and atkins choc. shakes.

Easiest way to prepare salmon: salt/pepper, a few drops of lemon juice, butter or olive oil drizzled over it, 20 mins/inch thickness in oven (er, I'd say about 350 degrees.) Not fancy, but fast and easy.

Dedpuhl,

Any online stores you can recommend which sell low carb food/snacks at reasonable prices?

How do you feel energy wise?

You said that you eat a lot which is good I guess, so you never feel hungry or starved?

BigDan - Thanks, I like those simple & fast recipes. Over time I may alter it a little to kick it up, so my taste buds don't go on strike.

Hmmn I should check out Toaster Scrambles, how many carb's per serving?

We're going to Albertson's tonight so I'll check it out.

ever try atkins stuff, any GNC has a huge section on it, they have chips, bars, candys all types of snacks and stuff, thats if u are trying to stay low carb, there is also a brand called Carbolite, which is good too

I was reading something the other day, but I hope I get this right. Fiber sort of counters carbs to a degree. So whole wheat bread may have 13g of carbs, but it probably has 10g of fiber! If you ask a nuetritionist about this, they can probably give you all the reasoning behind it, but I'm pretty sure fiber is something to be considered also when looking at breads.

RossMAN are you doing the Atkins diet? Just curious but why don't you try a more traditional diet/exercise routine for losing weight and getting in shape?

I've found that there are many benefits to exercising, and I've practically taken up running as a new hobby. I feel really great after each run and it has really helped me out emotionally. I used to suffer from depression until I started, it helped me gain a lot of self confidence and I'm MUCH happier these days. Another good side effect is that I stand up straight now! 🙂

For Salmon, don't do CostCo. Go to the nice local super market with a full service meat market in it, or a stand alone meat market and buy the pre marinated stuff fresh from there. Trust me on this, cheap salmon is GROSS!

I like to save money almost as much as you do, but when it comes to fish, you HAVE to be careful. I'm also picky about my beef, but not as much as I am about fish.

Once you've had fresh meat market beef and fish, you'll never go back.

fyleow - Not yet, just doing some research. So far what I have found seems appealing.

Perhaps it's as simple as eliminating soft drinks and exercising more?

Thanks for the advice, I have no problems buying fish/meat from my local supermarket.

What's wrong with CostCo fish?

soft drinks and beer should be among the first to go if you are serious about losing weight. Lots of people i know here give up everything except for beer. I just laugh and drink my water. I just tell them its a gin and tonic.

Well, if it's anything like Sams, the quality of their beef and fish is not nearly as good as what you can find in a good meat market. I dunno if it's a supplier thing, or a prep thing or a butcher thing. It just isn't nearly as good. Hell, my GF has even blind taste tested this on me, and I can pick out Sams beef and fish by taste and texture alone.

Maybe CC is different. Give them a try and see if they have fresh, in store, never frozen marinated filets.

How does bass taste different than salmon?

I might give CostCo fish a try, I'm sure that it's very safe although maybe not as fresh at the local grocery store. Also the local supermarket has a wider selection of fish.

Atkins.com and carbsmart.com are good starts. It would probably be MUCH cheaper to call all the health food stores in your area and ask if they carry low-carb foods. I went to order 10 items from carbsmart and they wanted over $20 in shipping. Also, Wingznut sent me this link.

I have 10 times more energy than before. I thought it would be the opposite since I wouldn't get as much sugar in my system. Also, I gave up all soda. In Atkins' book, he says you are not allowed to have caffeine (a fact that a lot of fellow Atkins' dieters neglect). I forget his reasoning behind it. He also says to avoid aspartane in his new book.

I generally eat a big breakfast (2-3 hardboiled eggs and 3-4 sausages), a light lunch (tuna/crab salad and some greens), and a medium dinner (steak/chicken/pork chops and some veges). The best thing to do when I feel hungry is to chug a tall glass of water. For snacks, I eat pork rinds or a handful of nuts or an atkins ice cream cup (depending on my carb intake for the day).

I just started eating low carb breads and tortillas. They are surprisingly good.

Eliminating soda from your diet would be a huge step IMO, that's a lot of empty carbs, calories, and sugar. Besides despite what Sprite says it really doesn't quench your thirst 🙂, I stick to water nowadays.

Exercising wouldn't be a bad choice IMO, just do a little lifting and jog on the days that you don't. It won't suck up much time out of your life, something like 20 minutes a day is more than enough. The cool thing about weight training is that they want you to stay away from carbs and consume more protein anyway so it fits right in with the Atkins. Instead of just doing one or another you could incorporate both and you'll likely see results faster and it will be healthier.

Just my .02

Damn it's going to be tough kicking the soft drink habit!

Um, no. You need carbs if you expect results from weight lifting. The only thing is you need to moderate your intake, and only have simple carbs post workout. The rest of the time, limit your carbs to complex, high fiber whole grain carbs. You want to go carb heavy early in the day, and protein heavy late in the day.

Weight lifting is all about explosive energy. You can't give maximum intensity without some carbs to burn as energy.

RossMAN, It's easy to kick soft drinks. If you're used to caffeine, though, you may suffer some headaches for a few days. I drink at least a 1/2 gallon of water per day. Do you have a bottled water station at your work? That's the easiest way to get started. Keep a cup and when you empty, refill it. Water helps to stave off hunger pangs and, even more important, can help you from becoming fatigued. Dehydration is a big factor in feeling fatigued. If you drink a lot of caffeinated beverages, you're actually making yourself more dehydrated as caffeine is a diuretic.

The Toaster Scrambles have about 15-16g of carbs in EACH pastry. They're rather tasty, though.

And, another thing to look at for lunch/dinner is do you have a Mongolian Grill type restaurant near you? Those are great! $6-7 for as much as you can pile into a bowl for lunch. I typically do some sprouts and a bunch of chicken and top it off with Sechuan, Teriyaki, Ginger sauces. You could make your own Beef Teriyaki, too.

We have a fridge here, so cold bottled water is no problem. I like the Kirkland 1 liter bottled water from CostCo, cheap and tastes good. However water is just so bland. Is Gatorate bad, carb's wise?

Damn I never knew the toaster scrambles had that many carb's, are they good or bad carb's?

I wish we had a Mongolian place near my work. If anyone knows of an affordable (under $10) near downtown Portland, OR please tell me!

We always buy the frozen Atlantic Salmon fillets from Costco.
Sure, it's not quite the same as a nice fresh Chinook, but they are really quite good.
And inexpensive and convenient too.
I think it comes out to like 3 or 4 dollars a pound.
You can pull a couple out of the freezer, wrap them in foil with some olive oil and seasonings, and throw them on the barbeque for 20-30 minutes.

Well...the carbs are from the pastry portion. I end up flaking off some of the outer portion and tearing off the edges to reduce the amount a bit. 😉

And, yeah, Gatorade is bad if you want to be on a low-carb diet! Once you've achieved some weight loss you desired and are more active (running, biking, aerobics, weights, etc.) then you can increase your carb intake as your metabolism is higher and you're working off carbs/fat and building muscle. Gatorade is good to use before or during a workout (esp. an extended one) to fuel your body.

And, maybe it's just me, but I can't drink cold water. I need it at room temperature. I drink so much and if it's cold, it hurts a bit. Plus, a friend of mine from Phoenix once said if you're hot, drinking cold water can actually be somewhat harmful? <shrug>

BTW, Bass is too tasteless to me. I like Tilapia, Orange Roughy, Bluegill 🙂
