700W OCZ Power Supply OK for R290?

All,

I'm not new to system building but power supplies are my weak point.

I'd like to upgrade the GPU on my couple year old rig to hold me over until the next i7 and DDR4 are out - but I'm worried my PS is on the edge for the power hungry Radeon 290. I'm currently running a 5850 GPU.

Do you think this PS can handle an R290 (will likely get this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150701)?

OCZ ModXStream Pro 700 W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341018

I suspect it will but it might be on the edge. I don't think its the highest end 700W.

The rest of my setup (no overclocking):

Phenom II X4 965 Black (140W TDP)
16GB RAM @ 1333
2 SSDs
DVD

This all lives in a full size ATX case with lots of airflow (2 front 140mm and 1 large side).

Thanks in advance!

Your stock X4 965 will limit the R9 290 very badly. You might as well get an R9 280 for half the price and you wouldn't notice much difference at all. I'd much rather just get a balanced card now, and upgrade the system more thoroughly later (graphics, CPU, mobo, PSU at least).

The next i7 (Broadwell) won't be out for another 6 months, while DDR4 compatibility will have to wait until Skylake.

i agree with lehtv.....the x4 965 will hinder the great performance numbers that you could get from a more powerful cpu.....if you buy a video card like that,,,,match it with modern hardware., espically the cpu. my first choice in power supplies is seasonic, or corsair...there are other good ones, got to read reviews.. i would not buy that oz psu if it was my money
