$700 price limit, What camcorder?

Ok, so I came online and my brother tells me he's going to buy a camcorder (digital). It'll be for his first kid, and he's willing to spend $700 bucks.

I of course know nothing about camcorders, only cameras, so I'm asking anandtech for help. Whats the diff between these Hi-8, Digital 8, mini DV camcorders?

I just got a good deal on a Sharp digital Mini-DV camcorder. 350 after rebate. The model number is VL-NZ155. I haven't really had a chance to play with it much. I bought it for my first kid, too. Due in November.

Yea, I was readinga bout that in Hot Deals. Isn't it 250 after rebate? I don't know how good the camera is in general though.
