I will be the first to admit that I don't do much international traveling, but is it fairly normal for international tickets to be taxed at more than half of the cost of the ticket itself? I expected maybe a $100 in taxes, but $362 seems ludicrous. This is on American Airlines flying from Detroit to Buenos Aires and I got the prices from Orbitz.

taxes on international airfare can be pretty high depending on where you fly to. i make these flights 2-4 times a year and a ticket price of $800 usually ends up costing about $1000-1200

All depends on where you fly. I never really payed attention to taxes (just look at the total fare and decide based on that) but thanks for explaining to me why tickets to Argentina (and South America in general) seem ridiculously expensive relative to the distance traveled.

would it make you feel better if the ticket was $1061 and tax was $1?

joke aside, tax on international flights are indeed expensive, and more so for South America (I had to book a flight for one of our customer from Argentina to Las Vegas, ticket is $1500 R/T; i could have flown to anywhere in Asia OR Europe for that price.

on other hand, I find out that flying direct may yield cheaper airfare, compare to stop overs/connecting flights. Because airports will charge the airline landing fee and if it is in another country, more tax, and the airline will gladly transfer those cost to you. So i find out it is usually around the same price if flied direct.
