70 thousand drug tests a month...

what pisses me off the most is that a worker that is a raging alcoholic and beats his wife and kids to within inches of their lives could keep his job while a worker that smokes pot on the weekends gets canned.

I work at one of the largest drug testing companies in the US. First off, stop worrying about getting hair tested. Very few companies do it because of the high cost. Most places are doing urine drug screens which in my opinion could be improved. However the growing fad now is saliva tests that are pretty fair in how long drugs stay in the body. You won't get busted for doing pot a month ago with these. The good thing about these tests are that they scare employees from using drugs before work, but I don't really think they are infringing on your private life on friday night and saturday. You wouldn't believe how many people get in accidents at work though and their post accident tests show they were doing drugs, so I believe there is a reason. As for people getting false positives or using the poppy seed excuse, throw that myth away. These clinics split specimens up once they geta positive and retest the sample with more accurate equipment that can distinguish from poppy seeds and a real illegal opiate. The same is true for prescription drugs, a lot of people try calling in saying the have a prescription for codeine so they will show up. While they do show positive for codeine, another drug shows up within the same panel. So before all of you start spewing off your mouths for things you don't know about or have read about on the net do a little research or shut up.
That's all well and good, but the issue is privacy.

I'm a professional with an excellent income, I don't do drugs and never will, and I have never pissed for any job and never will. The relationship between my employers (all my employers) and myself is that of a mutually beneficial business arrangement -- I make them money, they pay me.
I am not a slave.

Don't forget the worker getting physician-prescribed legal marijuana gets canned. That happened recently at Freightliner (a Daimler-Chrysler subsidiary) in Portland.

The article should include more detail about how much the drug testing companies like yours contribute to the government in favor of programs like these. Random drug testing is an invasion of privacy that goes against 4th (i think 4th) Amendment rights against unlawful search and seizure. I hate how my former employer wasted $66 per employee for drug tests and $100+ for work-time pay during the testing. I did not enjoy having a lady watch me piss in a cup, nor did I enjoy sitting through traffic 2 hours to get to the testing facility. I also didn't enjoy the total nervous sensation I got during the test (I had not smoked any pot nor done any drugs that year.)

I've done a lot of research (wrote a high school report and a college report against drug testing). The people that have drug problems at work are often obvious and should be tested anyway. I don't have a problem against suspected users. I have a huge problem with random or mandatory testing of all employees despite work performance. Pot wears off faster than alcohol - yet it can get anyone fired. I don't have exact numbers, but a huge percentage of politians in Florida that voted for the 'Drug-free Workplace Initiative' received money from the drug-testing companies. False positives also DO EXIST. I should not have to fear them.

Perhaps I'm a sissy for getting crazy nervous about the drug test.. But, I tend to get nervous any time I'm reminded of the police-state governments once-free countries used to have. Test the man that fvcks up on the job; don't test the man that's never messed up. I have a right to feel secure in my person. If I feel violated because of a forced drug test at random, then it's my right to feel violated.

exactly. but we all know there is too much money to be made off of testing and rehab.

It's about time. I've been calling for increased drug testing for a while. Everybody knows that cannabis users are the second biggest problem in this country behind those damn terrorists and now because of what I've seen on tv the damn dope smokers are the damn terrorists. It's obvious to anybody who knows anything that marihuana has no possitive effects what so ever and if you smoke it you are setting yourself up for a life of insanity, appathy and sexual predation.

God bless GWB.
Damn you. My sarcasm meter just melted. :|

AP) The federal government is planning to overhaul its employee drug testing program to include scrutiny of workers' hair, saliva and sweat, a shift that could spur more businesses to revise screening for millions of their own workers.

The planned changes, long awaited by the testing industry, reflect government efforts to be more precise in its drug screening and to outmaneuver a small but growing subset of workers who try to cheat on urine-based tests.

Some businesses have already adopted alternative testing, despite criticism by privacy advocates. But others have held back, partly awaiting government standards.

Kunsman said the labs affiliated with his firm this year expect to process 60,000 to 70,000 workplace drug tests a month.

HAHA!! That kicks ass. Now they need to do this for students who have scholarships. I know a person who works in bridge design who is a heavy drug user. I think some of you need to THINK before you say victimless crime.

Now if you're an "art expert", and you hang out in the park and talk about paintings, then yeah... go blast your brains out.

Random drug testing includes a breath test for booze as part of the drug test package..and near future urine testing will also include a metabolite test for alcohol. The supreme court ruled that "safty sensitive" workers and contractors have a "diminished expectation" of privacy due to the impact and responsibility of their work. And the "safty sensitive" criteria is constantly redefined and broadened. And the insurance industry has a heavy hand in drug testing expansion as well.

I've never been asked to take an alcohol test. Anyway, I've only had to piss for one job, and I regret that I ever did. I don't use drugs, but I have a hard time believing it is anyone's business if I did. Regardless, I don't see how anyone could confuse the safety sensitive issue with that of a Blockbuster employee, Mortgage Broker, Tech Support Agent, or a Fast Food worked. Pray tell how any of those jobs are safety inclusive. Drug testing is just another terrible idea and people fall for it.

YACN - Yet Another Clueless N00b opens his mouth.

So you think just because the guy is a "heavy drug user", he must automatically suck at his schooling? Get a clue.
