70 degrees Celsius for GPU (not cpu) core after overclock?

Hi guys,

just noticed with hwmonitor that while running cpu-z benchmarks the cpu temps after one hour are about 50 degrees celsius.

BUT, hwmonitor shows a GPU (i have a geforce 8800 gts) temperature of 69 - 70 degrees celsius.

I have in case thermal monitors and one of these is based on the 8800 gts card and it only shows 41 degrees idle (after 1hour of crysis is 48,9 degrees with sensor pasted on card chassis).

These are my bios settings

Robust Graphic Booster Auto
CPU Clock Ratio 7X
CPU Host Clock Control Enabled
CPU Host Frequencey (mhz) 333
PCI Express Frequency (mhz) 100
C.I.A.2 Disabled
Performance Enhanced with Standard
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) [2.00]
Memory Frequency (Mhz) 667 667
DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) [manual]
CAS Latency Time 5 [4]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# 5 [4]
DRAM RAS# Precharge 5 [4]
Precharge delay(tRAS) 18 [12]
ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD) 3 [Auto]
Rank Write to READ Delay 3 [Auto]
Write to Precharge Delay 6 [Auto]
Refresh to ACT Delay 42 [Auto]
Read to Precharge Delay 3 [Auto]
tRD 7 [Auto]
tRD Phase Adjustment 0 [Auto]

System Voltage Control [Manual]
Ddr2/ddr3 OverVoltage Control [+0.1V]
PCI-E OverVoltage Control [Normal]
FSB OverVoltage Control [Normal]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [Normal]
CPU Voltage Control [Normal]
Normal CPU Vcore [Normal]

What do you think?

Doesn't really matter, 70c load temp is fine for a graphics card.
It's also likely that your case thermal probe won't have a reading as accurate as the one in the GPU die itself, which is probably what HWMonitor is reading.

I would trust hardware monitor more than a probe inside your case. Either way 70C isn't bad for a GPU under load.

Very possible. I noticed that after an OC on my E2180 my video card temperatures went up. Before the OC (at 2 ghz) even old HL2 games were held back frame rate wise. Afterward (at 3ghz) the video card was working as hard as it could. And the difference was pretty large -- 49C to 58C.

That said 70C is on the cool side for an 8800GTS card.

Thanks guys,

i was so proud of myself:eek: that after hours of reading this perfect site I was able to overclock stable to 2,33 ghz (in stead of the 1,86 ghz).
So thanks for the relief and now i will ask myself...higher?

With your board? You can do better. 3 ghz or bust!

p.s. I presume you have a decent PSU powering that.

70C isnt bad for a GPU under load, i have a PCI slot fan sucking air right off of my GPU's heatsink/fan assembly, it helped greatly, after gaming my GPU will go to 58-60C, and before i had the fan i was hitting 70C as well, so if your that worried about it get a PCI slot fan..

Hi v8envy, i've heard that but with this pc i'm also working. So I i don't know which setting of the above i can increase a bit from time to time? The supply is the latest version of antec p150. the High Efficiency 430-Watt ATX12V v2.2 Neo HE power supply i think?

Hi Zane, a pci cooler is an idea but with 2 extra case coolers I was wondering how much dust my pc will eat :)
