Your dad sounds like a cheap skate.

Spend some extra money now and buy yourself a good "LIAN-LI" case (and you will never have to buy another one, unless you want another box). Get a model that has a fan hole build into the top of the case.

Also spend a little extra cash and get yourself a quality brand named (Antec, there are others) of approx. 500 watt range.

Buy a Sky Hawk MSR for like 20bucks, then get a good $50-75 dollars PSU to go with it.

If your dad wants to trust your entire system with a generic power supply, knowingly that it could surge the whole system and take everything with it. This is why you see people spend tons of money on there power supplies they are looking for good respectable brands that have a less chance of surging the system.

Well, considering the number of watts and 12V rail of a cheap Antec, I would shy away unless building a system that won't be very powerful and that I'm never going to upgrade.

In 2 or 3 years, we're going to have quad core processors that may use enough power alone. Then there is the fact Nvidia already made a request to the organization that establishes standards for PCI-E for another 75 watts to PCI-E cards. And we don't know yet how much the Geforce 8 line will require.

I did some research and I'd want at least Seasonic or Fortron 500 watts. Get a cheap Coolermaster Centurion 5 without PSU or Antec SLK3000B without PSU and a Fortron 500 watts.

I don't feel like linking....Newegg has a great 450w Fortron for $50.

tell your dad that a PSU should be worth more than your case. it's not your case that's seperating and distributing 120volts to all your electrical equipement.

Getting a crappy power supply is never a good idea. It can kill your parts and performance if there's not enough quality power being supplied. I went with a 520W OCZ PSU and it's not only really quiet, but it's really reliable and won't mess up my computer. You can't top off a computer with a crappy case and power supply.
