7 years in the work force and I bought my first suit today.

it's a very strange feeling to own a suit 😛 not that I actually need it for work, but my friends are starting to get married 🙂

I spent 30 minutes convincing the sales girl that I didn't want navy blue, and ended up with a $500 charcoal suit, a nice selection of burgendy and green ties, and *gasp* dress socks :Q

I?m a suit. And have been for about five years now.
One thing being a suit saves me a bundle of time doing my laundry: I get all of my stuff dry-cleaned. The only stuff I need to put in the laundry machines are my boxers and socks.

Charcoal is a good suit color: you can wear it to a Christmas Party or to a funeral!

I have 2 (one white, one black), but I've only used one of them once (sister's wedding).

Didn't you dress up in a suit when you went to your job interview(s)? I am guessing I will have to wear mine when I start looking for a job over the next few months.

the wedding I'm going to at the end of the month might end up being a combination of all three 😉

A white and a black suit? You have strange tastes. I bet people wonder if you are going to a funeral when you have the black suit on, and when you have the white suit on, who knows what they think.

Men's Warehouse?? That place is for rubes. Best place to get a suit is from a custom tailor, with the finest materials.

I dread the day that I get a job I have to wear a suit to. The dress code at my current employer is business causal (slacks and dress shirt, no ties). I own one suit, I think I've worn it twice. I hate ties. I seriously wish I worked a job where I could just wear jean and a t-shirt...and still make a lot of money.

A "custom tailor" can refer to any range of tailors, ranging from clueless hacks to top quality artisans, just as the library of fabrics they have available. In addition, the process is heavily customer dependent, and requires a lot of deep knowledge about suit styling, construction, and other details to work properly.

Considering that this guy bought his first suit, and considering how little 99% of people know about suits, it would be absolutely foolish for someone to try to go order a bespoke suit at that point. Made to measure from an established label is a more viable option, but runs the same risks, to a lesser degree. Men's Wearhouse is poor quality, and better ready to wear suits can be found quite easily... anyway, barring unusual sizing issues, people should stick with off the rack suits until they have the substantial knowledge and experience needed to be able to order a custom suit competently.

You neglected to mention deep pockets.

considering the frequency with which I plan to wear the suit, I didn't want to go over $500.

my company dress code = no sweat pants. my standard work clothes are jeans or cargos and a button down shirt 🙂

Well that's the best reason, although I do roll my eyes when I see people who think they can go online and order a $300 suit from some sketchy third world "tailor," get an ugly and ill-fitting piece of dreck that's worse than Men's Wearhouse offerings, and think they're clothing experts. Either way, if you don't have lots of money and clothing knowledge, custom is not a wise idea.

you can get a nice Brooks brothers or Jos. A Bank suit on sale for about $500 or less if you shop right, my current suit is a POS andrew fezza that fits like garbage...time for an upgrade.

I agree. $500 can get you quite far if you know what to look for. It's pretty easy to get really top tier brands like Brioni, Isaia, and Oxxford for that price on eBay if you're lucky, let alone solid brands like Canali and Hickey Freeman. I've never spent more than $350 on a suit (I have 3-4, including tuxedos) and I've done very well.

Of course, I should also mention that it's not a big deal how expensive or high end the suit is as long you get it tailored to fit you and wear it properly. Just having a suit that fits well and matching it up with the right accessories puts you above 90% of men.
