Wife still on the simple touch and I came across the Nook HD for $100. It's not that much bigger or heavier and had google play so she can Netflix and FB too. Is there any reason it's not a good buy even today? I know BN stopped making them altogether. Definitely don't like the Kindle way of navigating so that's out. Anything comparable that's not a no-name?

Nook HD is still nice for $100. Has a high resolution nice looking display, processor is the main weak point, it's slow. But for the price and considering how nice everything else is, Nook HD is a good choice.

Nexus 7 2013 is twice as expensive. But you do get a much faster tablet, even better display (very bright for outdoor use), and slimmer portrait bezels that make it nicer to hold while reading books.

From the wiki it says the galaxy tab 4 is the successor? I always thought that's just the older version of the tabs but I see it was only announced in April. Would you pay $70 more for that? Still only 8gb which is concerning but expandable.

Tab 4 is the successor? Not sure what that means, not to the Nook HD or Nexus 7 (though it is the successor to the Tab 3 as one might guess).

No, I wouldn't pay $70 more for the Tab. It's not a good value, probably a bit overpriced for what it is. It's got a quad A7 processor that may not be much better than the dual core A9 in the Nook HD, it's display is lower resolution, and it still only has 8GB of storage.

For $100 one option for a KitKat tablet:

TOSHIBA Excite Go AT7 Android Tablet 7" - Intel Quad Core CPU 1GB Memory 8GB Android 4.4 (Excite Go AT7-C8)

Newegg - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-801-_-Product
One of the people I work with actually just got one of these and I wasn't thinking it would be that great but it is real snappy with no lag and the display is actually very nice. Considering the price you are looking at of $100 bucks these are actually a pretty good deal. Yeah they aren't top of the line specs wise but if I was looking to buy a $100 tablet these are one I would consider for that price range.
