so and i thought maybe the new VWs were ok, but now i'm not so sure...

i am at my parents house (los angeles) for labor day 400 miles from where i live / work (bay area).

going to meet friends in downtown LA from college. getting up to speed to merge onto freeway which in LA means you are near 60-65mph at the top of the onramp.

car reports EPC and engine failure lights just as i get onto the freeway. have to pull over in "the ghetto". gasoline smell, car vibrating at low rpm / idle, really sluggish engine. takes a lot of work to start.

take surface streets back to parents house.

Will be VPNing to work remotely next week probably. I read online one of my fuel injectors probably failed. On a car with 9300 miles on it. on VWs brand new award winning 2.0 TFSI direct injection engine.

At least its a good excuse to hang out in LA for a week with a loaner car. Go VW group products!

Every Audi owner I know has frequent and VERY expensive repairs. It seems they like their cars are in the shop all the time - like on a monthly basis. It's like $1,000 minimum every time they go to the shop, too.

Still doesn't make me want an Audi R8 any less :awe:

well at least i dont have to pay for this repair.

i think it might just be a german thing. everyone i know with a bmw gets their cars in the shop all the time too. and yes, this does nothing to make me want an r8 any less. haha. ill ask for one for a loaner car... that could make this ok.

Ignition coils have been a past issue, could be that. They got recalled on my MY.

Why do people still keep buying VW products is beyond me. They are the only company who keeps selling cars despite their sh!tty reliability.

I keep reading breathless reviews of their small cars (they have a 1.2litre TSI Polo with a 7-speed DSG box here for a relatively low price), but the whole concept of longer-term maintenance and repair issues with whiz-bang gearboxes and relatively tiny high-compression zippety-do-dah engines scares the bejeesus out of me.

I guess people don't care if they are just going to keep it for warranty and then get a new one, but still, give me a tried and true little 4 cylinder and a bog-standard 5-speed manual box any day, at least at that end of the market.

Sorry to hear about that.

At least you beat my BMW by 7300 miles. I had my first HPFP failure at around 2K miles. I had another at 9K then another at 12K.

It's not even that, though. Assuming OP's car's fuel injector(s) failed before 10k, I don't think that's acceptable for such an expensive car.

do you have a 2.0T or 1.8T? i hear the 2.0T's mod like crazy. i think my brother's 1.8T is up to ~300hp.. can 't imagine what you can do with a 2.0T.

hans007 which model and year do you have?

I'm currently shopping for an A4. From what I can tell reliability went up with the 2008 B7 and is even better with the 2009+ B8's.

Hmmm I haven't heard of injectors failing as a major problem of the TFSI motor, sorry you had to deal with that.

If it makes you feel any better, BMW is having the same problem with the TT motors as doggiedog said. People are placing the blame on US gas quality so far because this problem is relatively unheard of anywhere else, but I dont know.

The TDIs are also having problems with US diesel lubricity causing fuel pump failures as well, but that problem is easily fixable. Hope Audi takes care of you in the mean time, if you are on a lease open a file with Audi USA and ask for a credit of time out of service.

In all honestly its probably a fluke or something, three of my friends have that exact same car varying from 1k to 15k miles on it with no problems at all. I asked one of the master techs at the largest Audi dealer in socal and he mentioned the only problem with these being a bad batch of seat sensors on some 2010 models, almost none were coming back for warranty work.

yeah i'm hoping its just a fluke too. one of my friends and a cousin of mine have 2010 A4s... and no problems though I suppose mine is slightly older than theirs.

havent had any other problems honestly california gas is also especially poor quality so maybe its that.

about 1/3 of the girls I know drive or want a VW Jetta. But they know nothing of cars and maintenance yet still insist on owning one and complaining of the cost. Is there something inherently cute or attractive about the Jetta? Whoever designed or hyped Jettas should start a clothing or shoe store.

1.8t, its a '99 - Hopefully with that turbo I should be around the 350-400whp range depending on the boost I'm running.

Hans, get vagcom so you can pull/clear codes + other cool things - you'll thank me later. Also, register on audizine.

Yeah audizine is pretty good. I was in another community but I can't even remember what it was called. Which reminds me, I need to order new brake pads and a wiper.

The only issue we've had with my wife's 2010 A4 has been the passenger seat sensor for turning the airbag on and off...was fixed under warranty obviously. Other than that...rock solid. We took it down to the Ozarks this weekend. Managed 33.8 MPG according to the car computer...so that should be pretty close to around 32.X based on past comparisons between actual and computer. Not bad for a car rated at 27 (Quattor/Tiptronic).

We'll see if it ends up being reliable...it only has 6.5K miles on it...so it's barely broken in even if it 10 months old.

If a german car is unreliable - that's normal and acceptable, and somehow "german engineering" is still something amazing and superior.

If an American car is unreliable - it is junk.

I don't get it.

I do hear these reports about the German cars in general. I have no desire to have one because of it. Although I will be yet another to say the R8 is still pretty darn cool :p
