7 Grand Steps

I'm not sure what this is, but I was playing it a bunch over the weekend. Sort of a combination slot machine/boardgame/relationship sim/resource management strategy thing.

Same developer as "Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble" from a few years back, if anyone else played that. There are some superficial similarities to it, but it's not really the same kind of thing.

Kept going back and forth on it over the weekend, ended up holding off buying it.

What's your overall impression of the game?

It looks like another game, I can't remember the name of, I'll try to find it.

It's based on years as turns where you put resources to different areas, to prepare for war, go on quests, explore the map.

Mostly text-based.

Edit: took a while but found it: King of Dragon Pass

Wow, you're right, it's very similar. I've never even heard of King of Dragon Pass but it does look interesting.

Not for everyone, certainly. There's a lot of randomness, so the standard gamer instinct to always win every situation won't get you anywhere. And there's both a lot of text (if you're the type to skip over the story text in games, there's not much point), but also it's not a coherent narrative, because of the randomness, so you're partially creating the story yourself. ("emergent narrative" as they call it)

The mechanics are fun in a simplistic board game way. When you get to the outermost track (so your family is part of the "ruling elite" I think they call it), an extra layer of strategy appears as your character helps run the kingdom or whatever, but it's not really complex either, and is also random.

So.. I don't know. Something about it is clicking for me and I've played it quite a bit, but I don't know that I can really "recommend" it as such either. There's a demo at the Mousechief site, and I think it covers the game pretty well.
