Microsoft asked us to remove the information but we can now reveal that these are the final editions:

Windows Starter 2007
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Basic N
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Business N
Windows Vista Ultimate
Windows Vista Enterprise
The news of the SKUs can be found on the beta pages of Windows Vista help.

Until Microsoft sends out a press release we're unsure of the specifics of each version but the N stands for the media player free versions of Vista which will be sold seperately in Europe.

No, they are not. There has not been an official announcement yet.

So they're pulling an ATI huh?

I wouldn't really count the 'N' versions because you probably won't even be able to find them in the US. And you won't be able to find the standard ones in the EU probably.

You wont be able to find the "Starter" edition in the US either; it's only for emerging markets.

And dont you people do searches? We've had several threads about this in the past week.

I anticipate a proliferation of "which one should I buy" posts ...thanks MS.

From a marketing perspective IMO, MS is hoping to sell more by confusing the consumer as to which one to buy, which one is more secure, which one is better, which one is faster etc... and there in lies the possibility that people will buy more than one OS per computer in an attempt to get the one that "fits" them correctly. The two versions of XP were unncecessary and probably generated a significant amount of "extra" revenue from buyers who felt they were "missing" something that they needed and went from Home to Pro.

...and we're still seeing the Home vs. Pro posts five years later!

And all of them could be avoided with a simple check of the Microsoft website. The information is there, and it is a very simple task to compare the two. People are just too lazy.

That's true, but I think at some point people want to know if they really need the features that Pro offers or not and want to enter into a discussion about it. Simply saying "Here are the features that Pro has and Home does not" doesn't really go that far into it.

Of course not. The information on MSCOM is more comprehensive than that.

I'm mostly interested in Ultimate Edition but when do we find out what versions have exactly what features?

I would a give it at least an RC or 2 until they decide on what they will be putting in what.

I agree w/ Stash on this one; the information is definetly out there (in muliple places in multiple forms). Most of the consumers who buy their OS retail or are building themselves a new machine *should* be capable of deciding which OS is appropreate. Generally speaking the consumers that are least capable of making a decision like this would be buying through a OEM who presumably would be building a machine that suits their needs (presumably).

Actually, it's 8 but that's still too many. Just think how often we see "what's the difference between XP Pro vs. XP Home" posts here? Even removing the euro-N and corporate versions, wait until Joe Clueless has to decide between:

Windows Starter 2007
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Ultimate

M$ is going to have to do a LOT of advertising to clear up the confusion.

Really? I've read that Starter is a low-end (ie.. anything less than 2.8GHz 🙂 )version designed to run on PCs that can't handle the new graphics engine.

You heard wrong. Vista will run on machines that dont have LDDM support (the new graphics display model required for Aero); they just dont get to have the hardware accellerated GUI.
