The list is missing one of the best:

American Express Online Savings. 1% APY as of today, no minimum balance. And unlike major banks, AMEX is mostly in upperclass/highend consumer cards business. They're not into risky futures/gambling business like Citi, BofA, etc, and also not into giving credit to shitty borrowers like CapitalOne.

I use Schwab invester checking account. Completely free checking (no fees, no minimum), unlimited ATM fee reimbursement (international/domestic/planet mars), interest bearing, iphone/android app check deposits, ordering checks is free, and an associated investor account (great if you have an IRA, or want to play in the stock market; it's so easy to transfer funds from one to the other). It's great because I travel too much for work. I'm surprised it's not on the list.

Technically, it's a "Schwab One Brokerage" account, and the investor checking account just comes with it. You can just use the investor checking account by itself. However, if you transfer funds to your account online, it may get deposited into the brokerage account. You'll have to transfer it to the checking account online (it's instant).

Their customer service is AWESOME though. They hire like an army of phone operators 24/7. I've never had to wait.. ever.

I call, and it goes right through. One time, my checking card was eaten by a foreign ATM (two days before I was going to travel from Taiwan to Chile). I really needed the card for withdrawals from the several countries I was going to be at for work. (I was on a mega trip from Asia, to South America, Antarctica, S. Africa, UK; most of the time spent in the oceans). I called them about the situation (from Taiwan), and told them that I did I have a 2-day layover at LAX on the way to Chile. They didn't guarantee anything (most likely a legal thing), but they had my card ready at a local Schwab office for pickup! Friggin awesome.. I can't believe they had the card made, ready, and delivered within a matter of days. I wasn't charged anything for the replacement. I was really expecting to use cash advances from my credit cards (ugh.. fee hell; especially using foreign banks). Schwab ROCKS. I HIGHLY recommend them. I tell that to everyone. Now all of my traveling coworkers use Schwab.

I also use a local ATM bank like Bank of America, just in case. BoA was my first bank account I opened when I was a teenager. They have the best website and ATM presence. I've never had an issue with BoA. I really like their accessibility, and their new ATMs are really cool and easy to use.

I have a couple friends who use ING, and they're happy with it. I almost went with them before Schwab, but Schwab's service package was a hell of a lot more compelling.

dude, you shouldn't talk about schwab! it is a secret!

My bank is awesome... Huntington Bank

Checking accounts still free (no minimum) AND they just eliminated the small debit card fee AND they give a 24-hour grace period for overdrafts.

USAA & NFCU for me. I've been thinking about switching everything to USAA but NFCU sometimes has better rates. 401k through work is Wells Fargo.

I loved US Bank, but they are not in Georgia so I went with Wachovia. When they were bought out by Wells Fargo, everything turned to crap. When this $5 debt card fee was announced, I dropped them and went to a local credit union. Seems to working well so far. I have co-workers that use ING and they like it. I think they either have or are getting check deposits over mobile phone.

schwab is terrible. i signed up, wanted to use their mobile deposit. super pumped to try it out. got the account created. first red flag - no way to electronically fund the account. how retarded for an online account... so i figured id fund the account using mobile deposit. applied through the app, claimed 3 day approval (wtf are they approving). week goes by, nothing. so i figured maybe they want some money in the account to enable all the features. fine. i tried to link my ING account, schwab never acknowledged the test transfers, so no go there. tried to link schwab to ING from schwab, they wanted me to print something and mail it. retarded. i finally broke down and mailed in a check I had. took a few days, they got it and the money showed up. another week goes by, no comment on my mobile deposit request. sent them an inquiry. they said, request denied because there was not enough money in the account! they also said they could not say what the minimum amount for approval would be. really? im trying to DEPOSIT MONEY and you saying i cant, because theres not enough? terrible terrible. very old-fashioned for an internet bank. everything is mail this, or call that. screw them.

set up an ally account, had the account created and initial deposit pending within 5 minutes. <3 ally now. schwab can go to hell.

btw, woudl have just stuck with ING, but i need an online checking and they only allow one per person (and i already have a joint one with my wife).

Wow that sucks... I never had these issues. Schwab's website does suck for a checking account. I think it's because it's mainly for people who use it for their brokerage account; and they just shoved in the checking-account portion as if it's just an afterthought. It took me awhile to get used to where everything is.

I've never had an issue transferring funds electronically. When I signed up, I just wired funds from my BoA account online. Of course, that 3-day waiting period seems standard for both banks. However, I was able to add my BoA account to the Schwab website, and vice-versa. I didn't have to mail anything. I had my money from my BoA account into my Schwab account within a week.. all done through online. I did have to call them to have them help me find their tools on their clunky website haha.

When I signed up for the mobile deposit service from my phone, it was approved within a few hours(despite it saying it will take a few days). I've had this account for a little more than a year now. Maybe things have settled down and things run a lot smoother than when they first introduced the investor checking bank? I know that the mobile deposits are a new thing (like within the past 2-3 months), but, it's strange that they didn't notify you that you got declined. That certainly sucks.

Chase are a bunch of assholes who will charge fees for anything and everything. I was charged a 25 service fee for not having 5 debit transactions from a checkinf acct I had with them. I also got charged interest on a chase CC even though I postmarked the check on time and they wouldnt remove the fee even when I threatened to cancel which I did. Too bad I still use a chase credit card because I have no choice if I want frequently flyer miles :(

Oh and I don't think this article takes in account that ing got bought out by capitol one, which im sure will impose ass rape fees gradually. Ing has been great to me so far though for the last 7 years

I just received yet another offer from Chase for $150 to open checking account with direct deposit.

...is now the time to just jump from bank to bank and run with their free cash handouts, feeling no guilt and shame?

I know I wouldn't.

Wasn't Chase rated dead last for customer support recently by consumer reports?

I thought Capital One was on the shit list too.

I've had nothing but amazing customer service with Chase. Way better than any bank I've had before.

I've got savings with Alliant, and they've always been great to deal with. However, I was under the impression that there were requirements to membership...either by being a UA employee or living in a certain area. Of course that may have changed since I joined.

I will also echo the support for Chase. I moved to them a year ago and now have my checking and two CCs with them. I got a $200 bonus for opening the checking account, a $100 bonus on one card for making 6 months of payments without adding any new debt, and am currently making a ton of points on an interest-free Freedom card. So even if I have to wait a few minutes on the phone with CS (I haven't, yet) I won't mind.

Most of your regional banks are awesome. They don't control congress, still have to play by the rules and rules are enforced. Problem is they do all their borrowing from the big ones so you're still captive.

Please stop talking about Schwab Bank. Please.

I'm mourning today over the demise of 2% automatic cash-back deposited into my account every month for using my legacy Schwab Visa. It was a good run. :(
