7.0 quake near Haiti sparks tsunami watch for Carribean

We are about 75 nm west of Georgetown heading due west at 21 knots and I'm told this area is affected too!

Knot that I would be worried about a tsunami but some people are reading into this and will probably drink themselves silly. (insert Poseidon joke here!)

This is going to be an interesting night.

Hope you guys are big enough or have enough stabilizer to handle things. Going 21 kts I would imagine that you are 🙂 Good luck and think good thoughts.

Should be no problem even IF something happened along I'm told. We're really outside of any fringe areas.

TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 1
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI

THIS MESSAGE APPLIES TO COUNTRIES WITHIN AND BORDERING THE
CARIBBEAN SEA...EXCEPT FOR PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS.

... A LOCAL TSUNAMI WATCH IS IN EFFECT ...

A TSUNAMI WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR

HAITI / CUBA / BAHAMAS / DOMINICAN REP

FOR OTHER AREAS OF THE CARIBBEAN COVERED BY THIS MESSAGE...IT IS

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 2153Z 12 JAN 2010
COORDINATES - 18.5 NORTH 72.5 WEST
LOCATION - HAITI REGION
MAGNITUDE - 7.3

EVALUATION

A DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT DOES NOT EXIST BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.

HOWEVER - THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF A LOCAL TSUNAMI THAT
COULD AFFECT COASTS LOCATED USUALLY NO MORE THAN A HUNDRED
KILOMETERS FROM THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES FOR THE
REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY.
AREAS FURTHER FROM THE EPICENTER COULD EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA
LEVEL CHANGES AND STRONG OR UNUSUAL COASTAL CURRENTS.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

i listened to a guy being interviewed that is just outside port au prince, he was talking via VOIP on a satellite ISP

he says the city (3 millions live there) is devastated, at least 50% of the houses are flattened

the death toll is going to be immense, it'll take weeks/months to count the dead and during that time epidemics of disease are going to break out. those poor people 🙁

I thought if you were at sea, you'd just ride over it like any other wave, that tsunami's only became problems when they reached the beach.

Agreed. In a normal summer rainstorm dozens die from the floods. They have no trees left having used them all for charcoal. Some people eat mud for dinner. Couldn't have happened in a worse place. My father goes (or went he hasn't for the past 2 years) yearly to do PM's/maintenance on the only CAT scan in Port-Au-Prince. I hear now that the hospital is collapsed....

Pray if you do that sort of thing, send money, get on your ham radios and help with disaster traffic, hop on a plane and go do something.

The awful truth is that we will let Cubans stay here in the USA if they float over on a door. If Haitians get here, they have to go back.

like any other wave

Something about the wavelength I bet. I've worked with the stabilizer folks (Quantum) but only on electronic boards, not about theory.

Yes this is about it. There may be a change in sea temperature in shallower depths over the shelf but the water depth under our keel here is over 3.3kM!

Of course the movies make people think otherwise and they think of "tidal waves" that flip ships over and stuff.

But, in reality, there are BIG waves like that called rogue waves. They were dismissed as exaggerations at first, and early math models didn't predict their existence. If I'm not mistaken, there was a wave theory, similar to something in quantum mechanics, which more accurately predicted the existence of rogue waves & more closely matched satellite data. I skimmed the wikipedia article, but I couldn't find anything about the model; not sure where I read it. But they did mention that after analyzing 3 weeks of satellite measurements, they found 10 rogue waves.

edit: okay, so I read the article further - nonlinear Shroedinger equation. One wave "borrows" energy from waves around it.

Yeah I think you could say I've experienced a rogue wave before. 😉

So you get free internet access while everyone else pays by the MB 😛

Nanometers? That's some very precise measurement for ship position. 😛

That what I was thinking.

And surely, being that close to the land mass, unless there is no beach and it literally a drop-off at the shoreline, you be in very shallow sea mate! Maybe a few molecules of water beneath the surface when measured at the bow?

It's nautical miles! Blame it on the forum changing the case of letters!

I guess it's better than running at 30THz. 😉
