6TB Drives FYI

Inb4 someone decides to drill a new hole and puncture the He gas sealed inside.

lol...

Serious note... im assuming to keep the He gas inside the drive, they had to remove the side hole? i cant see it as HDD vendors wanting to piss off Case vendors.

Only the Seagate drive is missing the side hole.

it is also the bottom mount holes as well as the ones on the side.

Just wondering if it might be for the first gen drives as they are 5 platter designs (I Think)

will have to try and remember this when the 6TB drives drop to or below the ~$30 per TB like I just paid for a pair of 3TB drives

Good to know. I probably wont be buying these any time soon though they would make a pretty nice raid 10 if you buy like 4-8 of em. 😀

I think that's the problem. Can't remember where, but I read about this before. The helium lets them cram in an extra platter or two and that takes away the space for the middle screw hole.

The HGST drives have 7 platters, but the helium operating environment allows for a closer disk spacing. The Seagate drive has 6 platters, but is still open to the atmosphere. This means less room for screw holes in the region that the platters reside in.

I'm not sure why the HGST drive only has the middle side holes, but with the Seagate drive, there is likely no room for screw holes of any sort near the disk pack.
