I had two spindles in an external usb3 enclosure, or rather dropin tray, worked good bit drives got hot and was very close, instead of worrying about it I decided to take one of them in(6 tb wd ntfs), hooked up to sata and power, all good, get into windows, disk management aaaand now the drive is .. a couple of things.

1st not working, cant assign a drive letter format do anything
2nd it says 2TB healthy GPT and 3.5TB unallocated.

Now I can try and clean the drive... and loose all data. Not that big of a deal, mostly noncritical video feeds..BUT Id like to know if the drive is on the verge of failing..

What did I do wrong? Or is drive going bad?

This... unfortunately... happens often, when swapping large-capacity HDDs, between USB enclosures / docks, and raw native SATA internal mounting.

It's really down to the enclosure or dock firmware. Some of them employ sector remapping, re-sizing, or offsets.

That's one reason why I always use a powered USB hub for externals, as well as generic external cases.
