I am buying this motherboard the asus rampage extreme 3. Is getting 8gigs necessary. I am planning and doing alot of gaming and work also. Also the graphics card that i plan and buying is a 5870. I plan to overclock this computer also in the future.
First off, that motherboard uses the X-58 chipset, so there are three memory channels, so for best performance, you should add RAM in sets of 3 DIMMS. Getting a 3x2Gb kit (6 Gig total) would probably be best.
Second, unless you are running multiple apps at once, you will be fine with 6Gig. If you do run multiple apps (as in multiple VM's and other programs that eat RAM, as opposed to having a couple of browser windows open at once), then yes, more the 6Gb can *possibly* help.
Also note that to even see more the 4gb, you will need a 64-bit version of Windows (or Linux) to use the full 6gig.
So the short version: Get 6gig, get 64-bit OS, be happy, enjoy.
