6990 Delay?

The delay may very well be real, but I doubt this is the reason.
[QOUTE]Although AMD has already unveiled its dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990, the company has decided to delay the official launch until after Nvidia launches the GeForce GTX 590 to prevent Nvidia from changing the GTX 590's design after reviewing the Radeon HD 6990, the sources noted.[/QOUTE]

Sounds like BS to me. Companies release products on their own timetables, they don't wait to see what the other guy has to offer.

I agree. If Nvidia releases the 590 and it blows away the 6990. What is AMD going to do? The design is done. Tweaking clocks will only produce minimal results.

Or maybe AMD has an inside track on the GTX590 performance, and knows the HD 6990 will outperform it, and don't want Nvidia changing anything ?

Doubt it, but it's possible..just like anything is possible.

Nothing more than speculation since anything can be speculated on.

The same thing applies to Nvidia. Designs are done. Tweaking clocks is the best they can hope. And that produces minimal results. If AMD had a faster part, I doubt they would delay to release it.

more likely the parts are quite close and AMD wants to steal NV's thunder. I could see this sort of thing happening, with both companies playing chicken to wait for the other to release first. problem is, once the cards get to reviewers the cat is out of the bag, and waiting too long pushes you too close to 28nm. they can both afford it for a couple weeks in feb/mar however, especially with so many people delaying upgrades due to SB issues plus the expected spike in amd fan purchases in a few months.

I'd put out a more business minded reason.

Maybe both companies knows that these cards are so low volumes that they only put tiny amount of money towards getting the out the door. As a result they take longer to do especially if both companies have more pressing issues else where. Basically, these cards don't bring home the bacon. So just like raising taxes in the USA (and you guys honestly need to face that in the near near future) no one's in a hurry to get it done and over with.

So another delay for AMD ? 🙂
ATI Radeon HD 6990 delayed

Are you disappointed that the dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990 won't be appearing in time for Christmas, or pleased that ATI is taking its time with its response to Nvidia's GTX 580? Share your thoughts over in the forum.
edit: At least we know it is coming !
