is the EAH6950/2DI2S/2GD5 going to make my system cpu limited, if running a dual core E8400 @ 3300mhz? I'm currently using a eah48701gb-dk, and the heat is too much- I have tweaked bios to lock in better clocks and performance states- but it is like a gas guzzler

yes an E8400 will hold a 6950 back. by how much will depend on the individual game, settings and res being used. a 6850 is 100 bucks cheaper and probably much more appropriate for your system. and hopefully you have 4gb of system ram too.

Agree with above, the 6950 is one of AMD's top high performance cards and depending on the case, runs warm itself.
What case do you have , model of 4870 that your having heat problems ?
But anyways, you can get a bump in performance as mentioned with the 6850. Its AMD's 2nd or 3rd generation 40nm part (if you include 4770) and runs fairly cool.

Currently, I am running a E7200 @ 3.8 and I am bottlenecked with a single 6870. So I know you probably will be too. And the GPU is stock.

Only with quad core optimized games and if your resolution is below 1900x1080 with some games.

I suggest a 6870 card for under 200$.

it doesnt necessarily have to be a quad optimized game. the i5/i7 cpus have much better ipc which can help a lot in some games.

1680x1050 widescreen resolution. 8gb of 1000mhz ddr2. I can oc the cpu to 3.8ghz, no problem. Thinking about building an am3 system withing the year, unlocking a dually for a quad- this gpu would be coming along.

how far along has the d&d transcoding in the 6900's? I have an extensive emdia library I'd like to xcode

If you plan to upgrade soon, then you lose nothing by getting the 6950, i say go for it then.

i have everything in an antec 300, with 3 additional 120mm fans installed above stock. I downvolted the bios settings of the 4870 to reduce power consumption. It just happened to drop temps by nearly 5-10 degrees

what exactly does this 'voltage tweak' mean? I'm hoping for an asus card that'll finally show up on speedfan, and also let the core/volts be changed with apps

just get a 6850 for that res. you dont sound like you have any serious concrete plans to get a new cpu anytime soon. by the time you get a new cpu, we will have completely different gpus and pricing. not to mention going AM3 with a Phenom 2 later this year would be silly at that point as you will already be starting off well behind the curve.
