  • No problems after more than 6 months

  • Killed my card within 2 months

There was a lot of scare mongering over flashing a 6970 bios to a 6950. I believe that one of the concerns was over the memory voltage and possible problems with the VRMs.

I am curious as to what results people have had after flashing their 6950s to a 6970.

What problems (if any) have you had and how long after flashing did they come up?

Or, If you have not had any problems, how long have you been using the card after flashing it (or how long had you used it before upgrading or selling it) and what were your OC settings?

When I tried it, I experienced some issues with crashes and such, and I ended up switching back. It's been fine since I switched back.

I didn't flash with a 6970 bios, I downloaded the BIOS from the card, ran the editing script, and reflashed. Works like a champ.

Yeah the shader unlock wasn't too risky. Lots of people were saying that using a full 6970 bios would burn out the VRMs.

I haven't had any problems with my 6850, I haven't flashed or even overclocked it one bit though.

I tried doing it through RBE when I had a 6950, was not succesfull.
And this wasnt even a 6970 bios. It was the 6950 bios just edited to unlock shaders.

So there is no garuntee your card will unlock, dont buy the card thinking it will.
Good thing is the bios switch on the card, which allows you to automatically switch back to normal if it fubars.

I think that it is telling that very few people say that their card was killed by the flashing.

I have this poll on three forums and only one person said that it killed their card (which was within 2 months). That's out of about 10 or so responses.

Oops I misread, I flashed my 6950s with modified 6950s bioses to unlock the shaders. I did have issues with my 6950s when they were flashed with 6970s bios.

You can flash using RBE to only unlock shaders. No need to flash to 6970 bios, thats what is actually dangerous.....

Flashed and used fine for about a month before reflashing to just unlocked shaders.

No problems but heat and noise went up too much for me to stick with permanently.

I did it the safe way also. I just unlocked the shaders on the stock bios and use msi afterburner to push the 6970 clocks then there is any 3d.

As for noise I don't use stock cooling so not an issue.
