Built a system for someone with a HIS 6870.
It worked good for me while installing windows and software. Once delivered I got a call within a few hours saying the screen would get artifacts and lock up when trying to play any games.
I went to the persons house and when I would start a game within a few seconds to a minute the screen would get little red and green dots popping up all over until you couldn't see the image on the screen then the PC would just freeze up.
I took the card out and he is now using the IGP without issue (except that it sux for gaming).

Does this sound like a hardware issue? That's what I thought at first so I recommended he start the rma process with HIS.

But after reading about driver issues with v12.6 could the driver be causing these issues?

I plan on putting the card back in and trying the 12.7 beta and if that doesn't work then try the older 12.4 driver.

what do u'all think?

specs: 2600k(stock), 8GB ddr3 1600, P8Z68-V LX, HIS 6870, coolermaster 750w PSU.

thanks

RMA the card and test the new one. I haven't heard of the recent drivers giving the 6000 series any problems.

For what it's worth, I had a similar issue with an HIS 6870, and it ended up being bad DRAM in the computer. A few days after the artifacts started, I got frequent blue screens. Ran MemTest86+, and sure enough, several errors.

The video card was totally fine after replacing the memory on the motherboard. Might be worth checking before sending the video card in.

Troubleshoot first, RMA if you cannot clear up.

Memtest86+ for RAM as mentioned.
Test alternate GPU and PSU (known good units, from your box maybe) separately, running Furmark to max out GPU load.
Test CPU with Orthos or Intel Burn Test.

Honestly, these are things you should have done before delivering the system...

Just FYI, I RMA-ed my HIS 6870 just over a month ago and am still waiting for some news from them. At this point I really just want to get my card back regardless whether they fixed the problem or not. (the computer crashes when running Heaven benchmark and Gamebryo i.e. Skyrim and Fallout games).

So be aware of it if you plan to rma.
I have all these games I bought during Steam sales sitting around cos I cant play it with my IGP.

Thanks for the reply's everyone.
I always run at least a couple complete tests of memtest after building a PC and there was no errors.
CPU tested for 4 hours of prime95 with no errors.
I will test a different video card when I get the chance.

thanks everyone
