6870 + 6850 Xfire?

I know it worked with the 5 series but would it work with the 6 series? 6870 at 269.99 is too much to justify but a 6850 at 169.99 would be.

I've hear of crossfire 4870 512 and 4870 1GB being problematic in crossfire. I can't imagine the two cards with a different amount of stream processors would work any better. Seriously I've never heard good things about hybrid crossfire.

You could always look for a used card. You might find a 6870 at a good price in the FS section. :whiste:

It should work, but AMD has not updated their crossfire chart with any 6800 or 6900 series cards, so its hard to say for sure.

probably best to just get a 6870 new or used somewhere to use.

Appopin at ABT tested that config. Says it worked well.

Crossfire can load balance between cards.

I'm sure AFR must work really well with non identical cards. I'm sorry but based on my experiences with crossfire I have a hard time believing that other than possibly benching that hybrid crossfire works well. You're already spending a good $400 between both cards why not spend the extra $40 for a better experience with less headaches.

Hey, I wasn't recommending it, just stating what I've heard. Also pairing a 1GB card with a 512mb card is just asking for trouble. No amount of load balancing will help when one cards buffer is full.

They work fine together. Ideally you would overclock the 6850 as much as you can to get close to HD 6870 CF

Just remember that Crossfire-X scaling is imperfect

Where did you "hear", pray tell?
:colbert:

i can tell you good things about hybrid CrossFire since i have tested it; do you want to hear about it or do you want to keep your misconceptions near and dear to yourself?

Have you tested it or run it for a good period of time in your 24/7 rig? Regular crossfire isn't perfect (neither is sli). I can't imagine an even more uncommon form having less issues. Drivers aren't perfect.

Here is the legit reviews 5xxx series review where 5870+5850 does as well as normal 5850 crossfire. This is Hardware cannucks 4xxx series review where once again 4870+4850cf performs as well as regular 4850 crossfire and sometimes worse minimums. It works but seems like a waste of money to me.

ATF forum does not allow me to link to my own research. i can't PM you the link of extensive testing i did with HD 4890 and HD 4980 CrossFire, Trifire and FrankenFire. You have PMs turned off ... As an alternative:
You can try a google search with crossfire-X explored
- the results for my AlienBabelTech article is on the first page of results

Yes i have; it runs great and generally without issues; no more than "true" Crossfire.

Unfortunately (for me), i had to send my GD 6850 to BFG10K for his IQ analysis so i will be testing SLI vs. CF with the following configurations:

  • HD 5870 CF
  • HF 6870 CF
  • HD 6970 CF
  • HD 6950 CF
  • HD 6970+6950 CF-X
vs.

  • GTX 580 SLI
  • GTX 480 SLI
  • GTX 460 SLI
  • GTS 450 SLI

it should be interesting with my 3 CPUs each at several clockspeeds:

  • Core i7-920
  • Phenom II 955-X4
  • Phenom II 550-X2

ABT results are on the first page. It is from 2009 but CF-X has not changed much except to improve the scaling.

nope ... no "extra" trouble

Pairing a 1 GB card with a 512 MB card is the SAME as pairing two 512 MB cards
:)
