During install and the first hour I've been running my old memory that was great with my x99 build - G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000.

However the system froze ~5 times while just setting things up so I just switched over to memory I had over-nighted by Amazon when I thought the system wasn't booting due to memory compatibility issues. Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Desktop Memory.

No freezes yet. I was hoping to just use my old stuff but I'll test longer and if it keeps freezing I'll have to figure something out.

And yes the 7820k is great (so is the 8700k really) but the 7820k and board were going to be $600 minimum vs $350 for this -- my goal was to keep this as cheap as possible. Just couldn't justify the 7820k. There is no performance reason for this move -- just for fun -- though these BIOS, RAM and labeling issues are kind of reminding me of why I switched from AMD in the first place years ago.

90 bucks is a bargain for the fun of a new setup.

I concur the 7820x is above the 2700x in terms of oc and gaming but its also almost twice the price on paper. And the 7820x boards can be a serious pita. My MSI x299 Gaming Pro Carpoop AC frustrates me to no end. The 7820x cpu is brilliant, but the board is buggy as hell. And MSI has no interest in ironing out their issues. I should have gotten an Asus board, but damn them and their crap support, so I thought I'd go MSI this time. Doh!

As far as I know R7 2700X is faster than 7820X in GAMING. R7 2700X is just below i7 8700K.

So if I could narrow it down to memory, do you think relaxed timings or speed would help with freezing or is it just straight up compatibility?

The new kit was 200 bucks so ideally I'd return that.

Not sure, but you could try checking for a new bios, and of course try memtesting it. It may be that ryzen just has issues with corsair ram though.

What kit did you get? Are they single rank, sammie B dies? It's been a while since I had a TR rig up in here and I've forgotten some of the ddr4 compat issues...

The corsair kit is new, 2x8gb and works fine (so far). It's also exactly on the QVL list. The old kit is gskill ripjaws 4x4gb that was fine with my x99 but froze the new system a bunch of times. Both kits listed above.

Under an hour with each so inconclusive so far. Newest bios installed.

Have you tried eg 0.3 volts more on the mem? If not you are into s bit of discovery in memsetup and it takes time especially as its so new cpu and rare mem configuration.
How sensitive is ryzen plus on soc voltage?

Well it just froze with the new memory -- so that's kind of a good sign for me. Will check out the settings in the BIOS soon (Win 10 updates take for...ever...).

You will want to fine tune the memory. Ryzen Timing Checker along with The Stilts timings really help.

If you didn't get Samsung B Dies, 2933 CL14 may be your best bet. This is really important!

Well I just turned on XMP which sets my memory at 3000 and ups the voltage to 1.35 (from 1.2) and everything has been stable for a while now -- even running through benchmarks now. Lookin good so far!

Did you guys know that Gigabyte's BIOS still has a setting for '3Dmark2001 optimization'? Is that as stupid as it sounds?

lol I seem to recall seeing that haha. But ya, you will need to run XMP settings and voltage, you cannot just set to 3000 or it may not get enough juice. 1.35v might be the difference here, that said, you still may be able to fine tune tighter timings. Just be sure to memtest for stability.

Depending on your memory kit and how aggressive your timings are, you may need to raise voltage from 1.35V to 1.38V or similar to be fully stable at 3200+. Or you might not. AIDA64 memory stress test or memtest should do the trick to verify stability.

Late hit, but my 6850K running at 4.5ghz with 32GB of 3200mhz DDR4 on an EVGA FTW K, 1080 Ti is still a superior gaming maching to anything AMD can do.

Wow a Necro :p

Anyway systems been fine, rock solid with my old Intel Memory running on super stock speeds (no xmp, 2400?). I know new memory is super cheap lately but honestly I'd never notice a difference. Don't think Heroes of the Storm cares if I have B-Die memory or not.

Looking forward to Ryzen 3000 and probably moving into ITX case (maybe custom watercooled) as a project.

LOL, I just had to look it up. Yes, they still sell the 6850k for $680 (newegg). For that money I can get a threadripper 16 core. And have money left over for memory and motherboard.

Its socket 2011-3, and I have 4 of those, but I have 14 core Xeons that I paid less than that for. And if I wanted speed, I can get 6 or 8 core Xeons for WAY less than that, and they will run at the same 4.5 ghz with a bios tweak.

Edit 2, here is a 3.8 ghz Xeon for $139

Yeaa at 1.5V at 200w tdp.
If op changed for 90usd a year back and got a slight perf upgrade he could and will upgrade to eg a 16c zen that at most use the same power oc and perhaps at same cost as a 6850.
Lets speculate about performance difference :)

Did you stick with the B350 or get a B450 / X470 for XFR2?

Still have the B350 because all of the mATX boards remain low end. Its all mITX or ATX I guess now, will get a new board and memory when I go mITX.
