Hi Everyone, I am looking for an upgrade to my 4850. Most of the comments back have said to get the GTX 460. While reading other messages on here, people have also said to others (who are trying to upgrade type of card) to a 6850.

So my question is which between these 2 cards is better? This week they have both for around $150 with a MIR, with the 460 having a bigger MIR.

I also am not sure if I will want to overclock it or not, so I didn't know if the answer would be something like "if your going to o/c then get this one, if not, get that one"

My configuration is as follows:

1090-T
12 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600mhz
Asus M4A89GTD Pro
ATI 4850

Thanks

link to that 6850 card and the 460 you are comparing it to.

Especially the 460 can be had in a 100 different flavors with one more overclocked than the other.

So link em both and youll get some advice

Edit: the Anandtech bench shows what i would call a draw between what i presume are referance 1 model and speced 6850s and 460s:

I think on avg the 6850 is a tiny bit faster... but its so little its a wash (stock to stock version).

However there are alot of factory overclocked 460 1gbs out there so... thats not always the case.

Both cards are great overclockers, neither one you get will be a bad buy.

I think both can be OCed but at stock 6850 is faster and uses a bit less power. I went from a HD4850->GTX 460/768mb and was pleased, at the time the 460 was cheaper than 6850 so I went with that. and wasn't disappoint. I got about 25-75% gain in fps in games depend on setting/game. if both cost similar and you don't OC then the choice is clear 6850. if you OC, I'd say either will do.

Viewsonic VX2433 - 1920x1080. At the moment, I'm playing Flight Sim, but looking for something that can handle the new games & current games that are out at the max settings (or very close).

What monitor/res, & what kind of games?

I just used the link to reference the exact model of cards. The price after rebate is $100 for the 460 & $120 for the 6850, which is close to the amount ultimatly I would like to pay, which was around $100

thats a 460 SE, meaning it will be torn apart by the 6850.

However, for 165 as the price is for the XFX 6850, you can also get a much higher clocked 460 or better, a 6870.

The 6850 would definitely be faster, especially since it's overclocked, but it looks like it's now out of stock and more expensive than $120.

The GTX 460 SE is a good deal. I recommend it to you over the 460-768MB. At yoru resolution it's pretty much the same performance. With a little overclocking it will easily be a bit better, and since it's the same price as the 768MB, it's a good deal.

The only other best option I see for you around $100 is the HD 5830 for $110, no rebate. It's about the same speed as to a tiny bit slower than the 460 SE. So it's priced appropriately.

I wasn't getting the card from Newegg. A local store has both of them in stock for $150 with a $50 rebate on the 460 & $30 for the 6950
