Hmmmmm. As an Alaskan myself, I should have had a better chance of understanding the post. But that doesn't seem to be the case. I *think* that SinfulWeeper is opposed to connecting every rural school in Alaska to the internet at the expense of everyone else.
But it's not because SinfulWeeper is upset at that communist approach to the problem. It's because SinfulWeeper's family is in the ISP business, and will either be forced to provide lowcost services to the school districts, or shut out altogether as the school itself becomes the local ISP. Either way, the state ends up running what should be a private enterprise.
As far as the cost of a T-1 in the bush compared to Anchorage, I can't tell where he's going with that. It's a self evident truth that rural costs for technology are higher than urban costs.
I also think he's saying that the measure to provide internet at below cost to rural Alaska has already passed, thanks to uninformed voters. Half of Alaska's population lives in Anchorage, and they may not have understood the implications of passing such a measure (which sounds good on the surface).
I have no strong opinion in this matter, BTW, just stating what I think the original poster meant. For example, I'm *very* opposed to giving special consideration to native owned businesses based solely on the racist practice of affirmative action. Alaska *PAID* all the natives billions of dollars in a huge settlement decades ago, with which the natives formed giant capital investment coroporations, which pay thousands of dollars a year in dividends to all the natives. This is on top of free health care and other Federal benefits.
