680i Your Killing Me

With more news and events it seems like everything is getting turned upside down with the 680i chipset. When the 680i first came out, all it got was praises from top reviewers, talking about finally a chipset that takes advantage of all the features the C2D has to offer. Now it seems that all the 680i chipset is doing is creating a huge paper weight! Apparently it seems that you have a 50/50 chance of getting a working motherboard using 680i no matter what company it?s from because I have heard complaints from both eVGA and ASUS Striker Extreme users. What really makes me mad is I?ve been waiting so long (and I know I?m not the only one) for these motherboards to come out and all we can do again is wait. It really makes me wonder if companies sent non-retailer boards to reviewers. It doesn?t make a lot of since to have all these beginning reviews saying it?s the best board to use and can do all this with out encountering these errors, but as soon as the public gets their hands on a number of them, bam tons of issues. I?m not trying to suggest anything and I understand that there will usually be issues with things when they first come out, but it still seems strange that none of these issues were caught during any of the reviews. So I guess here is my question should I wait another month (hopefully won?t take longer to fix then a month) or take my chance and buy the eVGA 680i board. What do you guys think?

Im in the same boat. I really want my 2007 Rig ready to roll.
I am also uneasy with the various real world reviews of the 680i.

But Im still trying to decide on a case that will house my 8800s.
Maybe I will wait on the Antec P190 and hopefully by then the 680i will be bug free.
😕

Same here, I am upgrading from an X2 with an X1k series card to a C2D with dual 8800GTS's and I really like the EVGA, I have talked to several owners of this board and they say they have had only minor problems to none at all and that the EVGA tech support is great, my issue is that I am a student in germany so I am lugging my motherboard from the states to germany and will not have a chance to test it out before hand, I really want a 680 board. So from the things I have been told I am going to take a chance on the EVGA board, plus I know the Asus board has problems with XMS2 DDR2 800 ram. I will be housing it in a ThermalTake Armor case

I've always used a simple formula when building Intel-CPU based rigs. Intel CPU = Intel chipset. However for my next rig, I'll be going C2D E6600 with DFI RD600 mobo & Crossfire. I've never been a fan of nVidia chipsets due to their "quirks".

Get the ASUS P5N32-E SLI board - no problems here 🙂 Well, the only problem I have is the BIOS - but that isn't a chipset thing.

It does? I'm using that - no problems here 🙂 Running at 4-4-4-12-1T (400Mhz)

I just read about some of the 680I issues today and I'm shocked. I pieced my my Striker Extreme together like two weeks ago, set up my nvraid and memory and its been running solid ever since.

I guess I got lucky. I have not attempted to OC anything yet, as I'm still loving the stock performance of everything.

I hear you on that one

I've always used a simple formula when building any rigs. ANY CPU = nVidia chipset.

and no, I dont work or advertise for them. they just make the best chipsets.
dont claim that a chipset with half as many pci-e lanes (intel) is more solid than the nforce. no shiet sherlock. learn to put rigs together, optimize windows, and install drivers properly. nforce will leave everything else in the dust.

Im running evga 680i + 8800 GTX SLI + xfi. should be the recipe for max problems, but I have none. and I play hardcore, BF2, COD2, source. Not 1 problem. Sucks to be the guys with problems I guess.

I'm also in the waiting game... waited the beginning of the year for C2D to come out. Waited the summer for NForce5 Intel to come out. Passed on NForce5 because no one built motherboards that worked on Intel until NForce6 was announced and almost availible. Now I am waiting for NForce6 to be fixed and/or have the normal motherboard makers release their own boards. I have nothing against EVGA, but they don't make the board. All they do is troubleshoot along with Nvidia. The Asus Striker is non-existant with only about 2000 boards in the market and delivery dates slipping each and every week for all the e-tailers (first it was November 28th, then December 1st, then December 5th, then December 12th, then December 15th, then December 22nd, then Jan 2nd, now Jan 12th.... keeps going and going and going....). Not only that, but the places that are getting the very small stock that is making it to market (newegg and zipzoom), and charging $75 OVER retail! In other words, I could walk into BestBuy (if they carried it) and pick it up for $325 plus tax. I go to places like zipzoom because I typically save 10-15% off retail price, I am certainly not going to deal with the issues of e-tailer purchases and not get the only benefit.

Sorry for the rant, but this topic is rant worthy. When is Anandtech gonna post their Asus Striker Extreme review? They have had one in house since the end of November confirmed by some of the mods, after 2 days of testing back in November. I know it can take a week or so to do the full series of tests, but we are hitting around week 3 now...

I have never had problem with Nvida chipsets, although the 5.11 driver was horrible it would cause my computer to restart if I tried to disable the Nvida Lan port, and Nvidia firewall is the worst thing in the world, other than that I have not owned anything other than nforce boards for the last 5 years.

Shortly, we visited ASUS, they visited us, and I think we have the majority of issues worked out. I would hope we do as my retail board hit 7x534 with the latest BIOS. 😉

I just feel that companies now a days are practicing bad business. It seems that now instead of releasing a good reliable component, everyone is rushing to be the first one out with the newest generation. I'm fine with competition because it can drive the price down for us, but its ridiculous if the product doesn't work right. I would have rather waited longer for the 680i boards that work then have to go through this whole fiasco and play the waiting game yet again. In a way I kind of want to take my chance on the 680i board, but at the same time I don't want to pay good money for something that isn't for sure. Oh and as for the ASUS Extreme Striker, ASUS better wake up because its ridiculous to throw on some bells and whistles and mark up the price for something that isn't better then whats out on the market. Who cares if the back lights up so it makes it "easier" to plug in your cords.

Are you guys doing a review of the P5N32-E SLI, or just the Striker board?

screw asus their board doesnt have the issues. and neither does their kick ass little 650 P5N32-E $135 dollar board.

its the reference Nvidia 680i boards.

1)Sata/Raid issues
2)Sound issues
3)Capacitors laying 1/3 of the way over. 100% piss poor manufacturing
Coil packs and capacitors and other solder contact points on the back side of the boards that are over 3mm long. making mounting the motherboard into a case a H U G E risk. possibly shorting out the baord and killing it and everything else on the board.
i have pictures and a thread at XS to show this where several people say their boards are the same way
4)Vcore undervolt
5)vcore droop
6)450mhz FSB limit with any cpu (this right here is the biggest pile of ****** i have ever seen. my $140 gigabyte DS3 would run 480x8 and this stupid ass board cant even boot up at 440x6, 7 or 8 or 9 its bullshit.

Gary go visit with nvidia would ya.

and just so you know, nvidia's recent statement about the sata issues being a driver issues is 100% lies! all of it.!
you do NOT need the nvidia sata drivers for SATA. and if you dont use the drivers the problems are WORSE. so taht means the drivers are helping but the core of the problem is the chipset. the chipset not the bios or drivers. this is not fixable either. they have to release a new hardware revision.

i have had 2 of the 680i boards and both of them were like twin brothers.

If the problem is with the chipset, then the Asus board, including the new 650i board, woujld have issues too, right? I'm not sure how this statement has to do with the rest of the post...

It appears that eVGA might have a BIOS fix for the issues w/ this chipset. Check out HardOCP under the news item "nForce 680i SATA Problems Fixed?"

Jeff

Ugh, damn this is horrible news. Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my RAID controller, and not use the onboard at all....

We?ve got the official statement from NVIDIA about the SATA issue to all EVGA 680i MB users.

NVIDIA would like to thank all of EVGA's customers who have purchased the NVIDIA-designed nForce 680i-based motherboards and who have patiently been waiting for a fix to the SATA issue.

Together with EVGA we are testing a new BIOS that fixes the SATA issue that some readers were experiencing. In the meantime, we are releasing a beta version for you to use. If you feel that your BIOS needs to be updated, we will be posting a link to download the new BIOS and instructions how to flash your motherboard.

Maintaining the integrity of our brand is important, however, it is more important for us that all of our customers have the best possible experience with our products. We wanted to send a big thank you to everyone who posted messages and technical information in the EVGA forums. We reviewed the message boards daily and the sheer level of information you provided was a huge resource in helping us resolve this issue.

We plan to release the final BIOS in a few days. Please use the BETA version in the meantime.

On behalf of the entire NVIDIA nForce engineering team, thanks for being patient with us while we investigated the issue. We hope that all future experiences with the NVIDIA nForce 680i will be a positive one.

Thank you,

Joe Darwin
