It's a tough call. If you absolutely love Doom 3, you should probably get the 6800U. Otherwise, the XTPE appears to generally have the edge at high res with AA+AF.

Of course, there are the usual drivers/multi-mon/image quality concerns/debates, but I'm mainly focusing on speed, which is probably your primary concern with a $500 video card.

But, yeah, look down the first page or two of the Video forum for a ton of debates on this subject.

There about the same, unless you plan on playing a Doom3 engine powered game, then go w/ the Nv.

The 6800 U simply does not compete under AA/AF conditions.

I think that its a little hard to say that. They both play past games well, but X800XT has an overall edge there. Its the new games that the jury is out on. Clearly Doom3 belongs to the 6800 and we'll see if HL2 belongs to the X800 series or not. Personally, I don't care if one gives me a few more frames than the other in general, but I would be dissapointed if its as dramatic of a difference as it is in doom3. I hope my 6800gt performs reasonable close to the x800's on HL2.

If they were a bit more available, I'd say the X800XT has enough performance to set it apart from the X800pro, while the 6800U likely doesn't over the 6800GT.

Hmmm, From what I have read everywhere I have looked Doom 3 is better with the Nvidia cards.
Now for the flip side, ATI is supposed to run HL2 better. I guess we will find out if valve ever releases the game. All they have done is talk about it for years so far. I am not doubting the release but I have to say I may not even buy it after all the bogus crap valve has laid out delaying the release for ages.

Both are great cards but I believe the 6800's offer more for the money. Speed wise the X800XT and the 6800U constantly trade blows with the exception of Doom3. The HL2 Alpha/beta benchmarks show the 6800's in the lead as well, but any ATI fan will tell you not to pay attention to those scores. I tend to agree and wait until the game is gold. I can play it from my retirement home. The 6800 series offer more advanced technologies and features. SM3.0 for one and a (not yet functional) on die video encoder/decoder. Its a close call between the tow cards but the 6800 series just seems the logical way to go.

And Nvidia has barely scratched the surface in improving the drivers for their new cores.

The xbitlabs review that GG posted is as recent as it gets.

I'd probably go for a GT at $400MSRP and an XTPE at $500MSRP, as others have said.
