My friend is selling his ultras to buy two GTX's. He offered me one for $450. I think I can talk him down to 400. How long do you think it will be until we see significant price breaks on the Ultras. This is PCIe, obviously.

buy both for 900, then when he's sleeping at night, sneak in and replace his Dual GTX's w/ the two you bought from him. Problem solved AND you get a nice bonus.

yeah, unless he has a really high resolution monitor, I'm sure he won't even tell the difference with current games :p

I doubt we'll see price drops right now on those cards because the 7800GTX is already well above the 6800 ultra's price point. I'd look for the drops to occur when they release lower grade 7800's. Not sure when that will be, but that's most likely when it'll happen.

they may be hard to find as current ultra owners look for a second one for sli. ;)

Since the sli'd ultras will still give mind-boggling performance, it doesn't make sense for many current 6800u owners to buy a 7800gtx at its outrageous price instead of a relatively 'cheap' ultra and 'tough it out' till nextGen when we actually see more major refinements on a smaller still die - by then more demanding games will be out and it could make sense to upgrade from sli'd 6800Us then.

The prices will probably drop a lot when the reset of the geforce 7xxx line comes out. That could be a long time from now, so if you really want an ultra, it's not a bad deal for $400.

Hmmmmm. I've decided to buy one. I may or may not try stealing the other. So changing topics, what kind of PSU is needed to fuel that thing? Right now I have a 350w antec which I'm almost positive will require an upgrade. If possible I would like to stay with Antec, but if you know of another brand let me know.

I think you might be fine with that PSU. I had an Antec Smartpower 350W before my Truepower 480W and I ran my 3.2c and 6800GT fine without any hiccups on it. Apparently the 7800GTX has less power draw than the 6800Ultra

I would expect the 7800GTX to have a price drop when ATi launches their 520 counterpart. When that happens, the prices of the GeForce 6 series will be affected as well.

It depends on how bad you want to upgrade, but I would wait and see the other 7800 variants (GT, vanilla) before I plop down $400.

Lmao, I love how you're contemplating jacking your friend's other card.
