Should I go ahead and buy a 6800nu now, and try to unlock/overclock to an ultra? Or should I wait a while and buy a 6800 ultra or better in the future, for the same price.
I went from a 9500np like you to a Leadtek 6800nu and the improvement was amazing
even before any unlocking & OCing. Even at stock it over doubled my 3dMark score.
You won't be sorry.
Have mine running 410/880 16/6 now and get 11,300 in 3dMark2003. With my 9500np
I was lucky to break 4,500 in the same nForce2 system.

Unlocking success is luck of the draw with any brand.

Sorry keysplayr2003 but your wrong friend. My 9600 XT ran way smoother in WOW than my 6800 NU did, this was tested after several formats, and many tests. All things being equal the only difference was the video card.
I'd say you had driver issues or something as the 9600xt and 6800nu aren't even in the
same class. Should have over doubled your 3dMark2003 score with no eye candy enabled.
The gap is even wider at 4xAA / 8xAF.
Some tables at Tom's Hardware to illustrate my point :

Did you reformat the HDD when switching from an ATI to nVidia? Some have had
success with using "Drive Cleaner" but I've found it best to wipe the drive
and start over. Totally eliminates the chance of driver conflicts.
