6800nu vs. 6800gt

alright, I can either go with the 6800gt for $255.00 or the 6800nu for $100.00 less. Is the 6800gt really that much better than the 6800nu? From the looks of benchmarks and whatnot, the 6800gt is usually only 10 frames or so ahead of the 6800nu, err, at least until they start adding AA/AF (which I don't really plan to take advantage of)

I'll be playing CS, probably HL2/CS:S/HL2DM, PK, UT2004, WC3:TFT, maybe BF2, and possibly Guild Wars. I hear the 6800nu can handle BF2 decently, and I could care less whether or not I have to deal with bad graphics/low resolutions for good FPS. To me, a frag > eye candy.

So I guess what I'm asking is which to go with, from someone's that's preferrably tried one, if not both.

Thanks,
Greg

the gt was worth the money...but not anymore. i'm getting an x800 vanilla becaues i COULD get an xl for 100 more, but i could use that extra 100 to get a 7800 gtx over a 7800 vanilla. catch my drift? an x800 or 6800 can do just about any game at 1600x1200. if you want aa, you have to spend that extra $.

Depends how long you desire to use it. If you're going to use it for over a year, I would say the GT is worth it.

yeah, I'm going AGP, and I want to use it for over a year. Still, 100$ extra doesn't seem worth it for +10 fps :| Unless I'm missing something, which I'm hoping someone will remind me of

Quite true, though I won't be able to install my new card for at least a week anyway (going out of town for awhile). So, any idea when those are shipping in? That's an extremely nice deal.

that would be a better deal if it had SM3...oh, but it doesnt.

If he's gonna be using the card for more than a year, i'd go ahead and get the 6800gt (which does have Sm3) because next gen games will be better with it.

don't consider and ati card. (unless they had the r520 out, which they dont).

hans030390, I'm getting pretty fvcking sick of you posting about SM3.0 in every fvcking thread I fvcking see.

Do you realize that less than 1% of all the games currently out support SM3.0, and the ones that do are garbage on a 6800GT? Have you even read any other threads about it? I'm guessing all you read was that gay little article and you felt the need to inform the public on what you thought was the truth. Sorry, it ain't, and nobody cares about your opinion. Please stop posting about your fvcking SM3.0. Thank you.

And thanks a ton to Creig for pointing out that amazing deal.

If you can get that X800XT refurb, I'd go for that. Ordering direct from ATI, I'd assume they'd use some good quality control on their refurb cards, so your chances of the card working just swell should be pretty high.

If you'd still like to grab a new card...I'd probably buy the 6800NU over the 6800GT. It may be in part because I actually owned a 6800NU and got it performing very close to a 6800GT, so I'm probably a little biased towards it. I'd still rather save the money, though. Who knows, maybe your card could do what mine did and unlock + overclock pretty well.

6800gt will definetly be more worth it. take my word for it after upgrading (sort of had to, after 3 6800nu cards my system became unfreindly with them).

Actually the difference with 6800NU and GT is pretty big with AA and AF.

The other side of that coin is you can get a 6800GT to perform like a 6800U with very minimal effort in most cases.

if ur not going to use AA and AF, then 6800nu. but really, if u can afford it get the GT cause AA and AF make games look so much better, didnt know what I was missing until I upgraded from my radeon 9800 to the 6800. Now I use AA and AF on all my games.

Perhaps they have a supply of returns undergoing refurbishment and are waiting until they have enough cards recertified to make it worth their time to sell.

If you don't have a huge monitor and plan to upgrade in under 2 years, then just get the 6800nu. I play mine at 1280x960 with 4xAA/16xAF and it never drops below 45fps in most modern games. The GTs main advantage for the future is the extra RAM, which will help in the future when more texture heavy games come out.

Actually everyone's opinion matters. Maybe SM 3.0 does matter to some people. Secondly, nobody really cares for your constant mispelled F-bombs. Thirdly, Sm3.0 will eventually become popular. Think about it. When SSE2 coding came out on the P4 people thought it would never become popular. But with time it did. Just because the opinion doesn't matter to YOU doesn't mean it doesn't matter to other people.

By the time SM3.0 games come out, NV4x cards will be too anemic to play them properly. SM3.0 was not a compelling reason to buy a specific card last generation.

That doesn't instill much more confidence.
