I picked up the BFG 6800 OC from bestbuy tonight and had no problems unlocking the pipes and overclocking. I ran into a totally different/odd issue.

Basically my 6800 card is hissing. When I make a internet explorer window bigger or smaller theres a faint constant his from the card as long as im resizing a window. I first noticed it going to Fileshacks website and hovered over an icon/link and the noise was even higher.

Things ive done, first moved the speakers out of the way. I've tried lower resolutions and noticed the hiss was fainter but still could hear it. I tried disabling the pipes and running the card stock, it still has the issue. I ran the card without video card drivers and booted it up into windows and the hiss was GONE. Completely gone.

Fast writes are off. Without the driver though the hiss is completely gone and its very strange. While running 3dmark 2003 the hiss is almost constant and changes depending on the angle and picture on the screen. At first I thought it was a hertz issue.

What im going to try soon is swapping out the psu and seeing if there is an issue. But im using a 431 watt enermax whisper that has good rails and constant voltages under mbm.

Anyway I really like this card and would like to get this problem resolved but I've searched all over the net and can't seem to find someone with this issue with this exact card. I've also tried the smooth scrolling fix. I may also try yanking out the Soundblaster Audigy 2. But at this point I don't think either of these issues will fix it.

My setup right now is
Msi Neo Platnium
3000 64
1gb corsair value ram
Audigy 2
DVD-RW 8x
Western Digital 120GB HD

Any ideas/help is appreciated.

Yeah I can't tonight, I'll mess with it tomorrow/ later today. The noise is clearly not coming from the psu, its from the card and its not the fans either. The more and more I surf the net the more and more wierd noises I notice coming from it. I've got it down to the bare right now, just HD, vid, cpu.

One thing I'd like to point out again. Once I remove the nvidia drivers the hiss is completely gone.

Well I did two things. One I swapped the PSU. Two I put the 6800 in another comp. In a different comp I didn't notice the noises. So I put a different psu in my current comp and put in the 6800 only to find it making the same noises again. What I also notice is the fan on the video card runs full speed at bootup only to change once I get into windows. Is that normal?

If anyone has any other ideas let me know.

This may sound wierd but it could be interference with your sound card or on board chip or your speakers. I had a strange sound once like that and it was the frequency from my video card interfering with my sound card/speakers. I'm not sure what on the card was doing it but I think it was the fan. I used a different pair of speakers and the sound went away.

Another thing is that you have multiple fans in your system. Some fan frequencies can become harmonic which will make a noise with different degrees of noise depending on the fans. (I'm not joking :) )

Maybe try unpluging the sound card and reboot? Or try slower revolution fans?

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks for the help. I tried removing the sound card and it didn't help. I've tried different versions of drivers and it didn't help either. I removed my chipset drivers it didn't change anything. I upped the agp voltage and it didn't change anything. I'll turned off my speakers too and didn't help.

The wierdest thing about all of this is, this hiss all go aways if I remove the video card drivers. As soon as I install the video card drivers on this comp, the hissing begins. I'm usually fairly good with diagnosing computer issues and rarely even come to these forums with a question. But on this im stumped.

Well I stuck this card in my friends neo2 platinum and got the same hissing. I'm going to assume im just going to have to return the card, which sucks because it unlocks and is such a good performer. If anyone has seen this issue before let me know.

I returned it today and got another one, this one won't unlock and still has the same hissing issues. I can't tell if its a flaw with nforce 3 board of the cards itself. My friends comp is nforce 3 based and it has the same hissing in a totally different room. Not only that his 6800 ultra works fine with no hissing what soever. Think im going to return this for cash and try something else. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry to hear about the hissing. That's a wierd problem for sure. My brand new BFG 6800 OC doesn't make this hissing noise thank god.

Can I ask about this unlocking of pipelines and shaders? Can anyone link me?

Well I tried this is two different computers with two different monitors, even removed the monitor completely in one test. My description of a hiss may not be perfect. You know when a CD is being read by a cd-rom and it makes those skipping/high pitch sounds, thats basically exactly what my card was doing. You could hear it in bootup. And no i didn't have a cd in my dvd-rw =P. I just find it very odd. It seemed there was nothing I could do to fix it.

Mega check out Rivatuner and the Rivatuner forums.
